Future Engineers - The Silence (1997)
A note to future STEM students, from someone who cares.
I want to relay some of my experiences to you, as someone who has been in your shoes. I know that often, before college and before a career, you will be advised to make your whole life revolve around STEM. You should join math clubs and robotics teams and have passion projects you work on outside of school, and those are all great things. You should do them because they can teach you what you love to do, and will set you up for success in school and in work. But I encourage you to find another hobby, not video games or TV or another STEM activity. I want you to find a creative outlet, painting or knitting or drawing or any other art. I know the adults in your life may be pushing you to spend all your time on your career path but you may find that once you are there, once you have a job or are working full time as a STEM student that you don't have any energy left to work on more math and science outside of your scheduled day. You may find that you don't know what to do with your time, since you no longer have the energy to pursue your schoolwork or job outside of the office or classroom. And that is okay!! It really is!! It means you are doing something you love and are motivated to do. You kick ass. But I also want you to be able to sit down and be creative and be proud of something you chose to do, not something that was assigned. Maybe you want to be proud of your plants or a blanket you made or a new instrument you are learning or a painting you started. You just need to have something you can do outside of the rigid course that STEM can lock you in to. It can be draining and even cause you to burn out in something you love and are good at. So please, from someone who gets it, find something(s) you love creating and stick with it. The brain needs to be creative, the brain needs something beyond numbers and sleep, and you deserve to feel whole and well rounded and not burnt out or restless.
