Excuse me while I lose my shit going through the special features for the first time. In Season X: Scully does her "I've been waiting 23 years to say that" line and then she gives Mulder a low-five. !!!!!! How did that end up on the cutting room floor?! It's so freaking cute.
This is such a ridiculous theory. And it really doesn’t hold true with anything I want to actually believe about this show that I love...but I felt the need to flesh it out so that I can get it out of my head and stop thinking about it.
Pre-revival CC hints that they’ll address Scully’s immortality in the revival. Then Scully casually mentions her ‘immortality’ to Mulder (like it’s totally a thing they talk/joke about, when it really never was before, but whatever).
So then in My Struggle 2 we find out that Scully is one of the ‘chosen’ and won’t get sick and die (what a massive change the entire mythology, but whatever, we’re not here to talk about that). So why do I feel like this is what CC was hinting at? She’s safe in the apocalypse. Scully’s ‘immortality’ is that she isn’t going to die with everyone else. It’s not really ‘immortality’ but this is CC, so ‘immortality’ means whatever the fuck he wants it to mean at that point in time. And not dying with the rest of the population is a pretty big deal.
This fits in with Clyde Bruckman telling Scully that she isn’t going to die. Kudos, Chris, you remember one line that really could have been him just not wanting to tell her how she dies. But anyway, Clyde could just see her not dying in the apocalyptic plague, so therefore she doesn’t die. (sidenote: given that Clyde hints that Mulder dies of auto-erotic asphyxiation, he isn’t going to die in this plague either, so there’s that. I mean unless the only way to cure Mulder is for Scully to fuck the disease out of him, and ya know, accidentally goes to far...).
This doesn’t so much fit in with Fellig taking Scully’s place with death, possibly making her immortal. But ya know, it’s CC, he probably forgot exactly what happened in this episode, and just remembered that it hinted at Scully being immortal. That is what happens when you refuse to have a show bible to keep your own show consistent.
Phew, that’s out. Now perhaps I can move on and think about happier things, like Scully being Mulder’s weakness. (oh boy, surprise, she was his weakness way back in season 2, but it’s still nice to acknowledge it).
From the brilliant and lovely Jessica at TWOP (at the time season 9 was airing!), now of Go Fug Yourself, this comment was relevant in 2001 and still rings so true to me now. This is how fans have been feeling for years.
“I keep thinking about that comment Chris Carter made a couple of years ago, about how The X-Files isn't about the characters, it's about the story. And it's so the opposite of that. No matter what you believe about the nature of Mulder and Scully's relationship, the thing that drove the show was, fundamentally, that relationship. And it's not that the stories weren't interesting, because they were. But interesting stories are much more involving when you care about the people they happen to.”
“I can’t thank him enough. I think he is very thoughtful in everything he does and you know he gives everyone a chance and gets the best out of all the players, which is a very good quality as well.”
