Gatchaman - Ken: Deathmatch #1
"Godzilla Minus One" is a powerhouse of a film, and the best monster movie put to screen since Shin Godzilla 8 years ago.
It takes the gargantuan creature back to its roots again, this time setting the story in post-WWII Japan. The story follows Shikishima, a kamikaze pilot who abandoned his post in the war. It is an emotionally heavy film, focusing a lot of time on the way WWII hit families. When I say I cried, I don't mean a tear or slightly misty - I was full-on ugly sobbing.
Godzilla Minus One is a phenomenal film, and I'm so glad I got to see it in IMAX. I'm gonna be thinking about it for a week.
Which Side Are You On? (remix by Rebel Diaz, dead prez, Rakaa Iriscience)
Lyrics:
[Intro: Pete Seeger] Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on?
[Verse 1: G1] See before I draw the line, I gotta welcome you close To all the folks who knew Obama sold the people a hoax Gave the money to suckas while our community's still poor Withdrew the troops but started another war Colonized and terrorized and created an oil crisis So they could make a killin' on food and gas prices Prisons is fillin', they tryna lock up the future Militarize borders and control of computers While the stupid bumping music that ain't healthy for the shawties Povertize the schools and policeman in the hallways Can't be dormant, I've awoken, rise up, be ready Brought the family with us and we hold the machete
[Verse 2: M-1] Ridin' the fence, ridin' the fence Too many people be ridin' the fence Yeah you say you're ready for war but are you convinced? I'm not convinced If you're a writer, freedom fighter, crime exciter, then let's do this We can make one big united middle finger to the U.S Gimme the bravest and the truest, fuck the hippest and the coolest We're gonna spark this revolution and cross this off our to-do list Put your foot down if you look down on this criminal system Put your book down and get shook down like my niggas in prison Don't be condemning and condoning they actions in one sentence Now keep in mind, you decide Is you a patriot or a menace to society? So riot or sit by quietly But don't pull out your flag and try to say you gon' ride with me You flip-flopping like hip-hop, I don't get locked in that trick box Get got like Big and Pac, shit's got to stop "I am the people, not the pig," I repeat after Fred So please blow my brains out if I ever forget
[Verse 3: stic.man] I'm with the independent thinkers, I'm down with the movers and the shakers And the ex-Henny drinkers, the non-smokers The health advocates, the non-voters The young bloods in the hood trainin' like soldiers I'm on the side of the tracks with the hood gardens With the little child that don't color inside the margins I don't ride the fence, I cultivate my strength 'Cause if it ain't about power, it don't make sense I've been down with Boogie Down since BDP and Brown Pride And black power make RBG a OG An OG told me choose your battles wisely In the struggle, don't forget about your children and your wifey If you don't see me on the podium, preachin' it Every day, I hope my every action is teaching it 'Cause revolution is a process, it's not a speech or a panel Don't bite off more than you can handle
[Chorus: Pete Seeger & RodStarz] Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Chi City, Palastina, Venezuela Which side are you on, boy? Which side are you on? Which side are you on, boy? To South Bronx baby! Which side are you on?
[Verse 4: RodStarz] Ay, I still rock hard like slingshots in Palestina Con todos los estudiantes por educación gratuita I'm with workers uprising and the right to unionize We ain't crossed the border, so you better legalize I'm with la Penã del Bronx, I'm still with Victor Toro 'Cause gentrification is pollutin' my borough Sold bro never, South Bronx forever Decolonize the block, make your neighborhood better I ain't down with the rich, I'm more Richie Perez Don't talk to grand juries or cooperate with feds I'm with students, doctors, janitors, teachers We need living wages but they don't believe us Manida, Baretto, Spofford, Hunts Point My point, my hood I love, we join, forces Forming RDAC-BX Taking over buildings, Rebel Diaz for the children
[Verse 5: Rakaa Iriscience] Politics the sickness, streets express symptoms Caught up with a quickness, big business pimps 'em Scholars play the simpleton, fools play with wisdom Who will stand and fight back, who will play the victim? Trials and tribulations, here's your generations Stolen history and outsourced innovation Babel tower fell, tribes are at war The battle story not represented in the score The game's fixed, most of the faces and names switched Credit stolen for art, science, religion, language Technology, philosophy, and the strangest They paid in Haitian for the knowledge of the ancients Power in words, actions, guns swords Ain't Paris, Brown Berets, young lords, pick a side One sickness, one cure, one love One blood, one world, one war
[Chorus: Pete Seeger] Which side are you on? Which side are you on? Which side are you on? Which side are you on?
[Outro: Pete Seeger] Come all of you good workers Good news to you I'll tell Of how the good ol' union Has come in here to dwell
Needless to say, I loved Godzilla Minus One, but…
It has the most pathos of any Godzilla movie I’ve yet seen, an utterly terrifying depiction of the G-man, and superbly written human characters. Godzilla as a symbol of PTSD and the way trauma never really leaves a person (as shown in the final scene) is profound — it’s a delight to see people traumatized by war achieve a redemptive victory and defeat their metaphorical trauma, at least for now, and the message to live for a better future is something just as valuable now as it is for the time period of the film.
However, I can’t forgive this film for the crime of not being Shin Godzilla, my favorite movie ever. This is ultimately subjective, but I find I greatly prefer Shin’s animal lashing out in pain to the angry, vengeful monster of Minus One. MinusGoji is a classic Godzilla (plus regeneration and detonating atomic breath), and that suits the film, but I prefer the risks taken to make ShinGoji weird and distinct. Shin Godzilla is the story of the world’s most difficult euthanasia, not the genuine, personal conflict of Minus One, and while the deeply personal story of Minus One is beautiful and engaging, but it doesn’t hit as close to home for me as Shin’s exploration of how politicians would genuinely react to an unprecedented disaster — Shin is deeply concerned with political power, while Minus One focuses on the actions of postwar civilians and individuals. Minus One is the Godzilla movie we’ve all been waiting for, a proper tribute to the original, but it just can’t beat the deconstruction of Shin for me. Much as I enjoyed it, I left the theater wishing I had rewatched Shin.
Minus One gets a 9/10 from me. It’s my third favorite Godzilla film after the political drama of Shin and the Kaiju-on-kaiju action of KOTM. Of all Godzilla films, Minus One has the best vocalizations for Godzilla, so definitely see it before it leaves IMAX.
KEN THE EAGLE
From Science Ninja Team Gatchaman (aka Battle of the Planets) comes G-1, Ken the Eagle!
This highly articulated, die-cast metal action figure, is from Tasunoko Heroes Fighting Gear line from Sentinel Toys.
Tasunoko Productions is the Japanese animation production company that gave us so many great series over the years, including Neo Human Casshan (Casshern), Hurricane Polymar, Genesis Climber Mospeada (Robotech: The New Generation), and Yatterman.
The Ken figure is well-built and has some heft to it. There are some plastic parts, but most of it is constructed from solid metal. You would not want this guy thrown at you!
Sentinel did an excellent job recreating Ken’s likeness from the animated series.
The figure comes with alternate sets of hands, including fists, and Ken’s distinctive bird-shaped throwing weapon. I thoughtfully placed all those extra parts in a labelled Ziplock bag, then promptly forgot where I put the bag.
This figure was released in 2015, which is around when I purchased him. He’s been living on one of my bookshelves since then.
Some purists may not be happy with the armor-like appearance of Ken’s costume. I completely understand that, but the armor look makes sense given his die-cast construction.
Other than Joe the Condor, G-2, I’m not aware of any other Gatchaman members being included in the line. I have yet to get my hands on Joe’s figure, as the price on these figures climbs every year (they originally start out at an MSRP around $80 USD).
Another great feature of the Fighting Gear figures is the light-up chest emblem! It’s so bright it could almost double as a night light.
In the two photos above, the top one was taken with the camera flash “on,” and the flash was “off” for the bottom photo.
I’ve noticed while shopping for Tasunoko Heroes Fighting Gear figures that each character seems to have at least one variant. For Ken the Eagle the variant is him wearing his costume as it appeared in the Infini-T Force* manga and animated series. I’ve yet to snag that one yet, but I always keep my eyes peeled for it.
(* For anyone unfamiliar with Infini-T Force, it was a manga crossover between four of Tatsunoko Productions’ biggest heroes from the 1970s: Ken the Eagle from Gatchman, Tekkaman, Hurricane Polymar, and Casshan. It was followed by a 12-episode anime series that used the same characters and concept, but had a different story. This was followed-up the following year by a theatrical film which utilized the same cast and characters, but also included Joe the Condor, G-2, from Gatchman.)
