Ferelden has really been letting the Grey Wardens get away with way too much after the Fifth Blight, if it even was a real blight. ULMCSD Round 1, Match 6 - "Only One Twink Elf Can Survive" - Ga-sun Lavellan vs. Ambrose

genuinely just kind of a stoner youngest sibling who stumbled his way into unwillingly becoming a religious figurehead but it's Cool, he just has to commit to adopting a worksona with a different name and personality, and he'll sort this out and go back home to his life and his family and it'll be Fine. he doesn't know or care about all these human political conflicts he is just trying to keep the world from ending. only ever shared its real name, basic personal information, and actual personality/sense of humor with dorian, sera, and blackwall. regarded by the rest of the inquisition as fairly quiet and serious. eventually had to accept that there was no way to not have all the religious and political power of the inquisitor, and tried his best to wield that power responsibly. but it still never gets to go back home.

nothing bad ever happens to ambrose. kind of like if an albino lab rat was a person for the first time and had mushrooms growing out of its head. they're polite and cheerful, only slightly condescending for a noble, and also genuinely do not believe it is possible for them to form meaningful connections with other people, because being an unidentified godlike has always set them apart from everyone else. but they don't think their mother saying to their face she could never love them or think of them as her child gave them any problems. honestly they get it. a respectably nonviolent servant of aedyr's imperial interests until they came to the living lands and, for the first time, found a sense of belonging with someone who understood and loved them. still doesn't really have a sense of morality outside of their singular loyalty to their parentchildsoulmate they just met who they never want to be apart from ever again. but it's okay because they are experiencing romantic love for the first time for a guy who has, like, three morals and commitment issues, there's no way this could end in tragedy

Standard caveat that I'm sure this information exists somewhere and I am just failing to find it but what is the deal with Ga-sun and Ga-kei both being "Arav'assan" in different worldstates anyway. Sorry I'm nosy

it's definitely buried somewhere obscure in their tags and i don't mind being given the opportunity to rehash and expand on it again so no worries boss ^_^

"arav'assan" is the inscription on ga-sun's ironbark hunting dagger, made for it by ga-hou, the middle brother between ga-kei and ga-sun and one of clan lavellan's craftsmen. they're both actually closer to him than they are to each other, partially because they're 9 years apart in age. the vibes-based elvish i'm going for here is "travel like an arrow," which is half good luck charm (move fast and strike surely) and half ga-hou making a little joke about ga-sun primarily being an archer, so hopefully you can use this knife just as well :)

neither ga-kei nor ga-sun are particularly eager to share personal information with the chantry affiliated organization that's taken them prisoner. so ga-sun takes its worksona's fake name from the dagger because, well, it's right there and it's easy, and it's a little reminder of its life and actual family outside of all this. he did not expect to be stuck using this name for literal years but tbh given the chance to redo it he wouldn't have chosen anything else.

ga-kei's story is a little more involved. in ga-sun inquisitor worldstate, it went to the conclave alone, but in ga-kei inquisitor worldstate, the two of them went together. after waking up, while traveling back to the ruins of the temple, ga-kei was holding onto a tiny little shred of hope that Maybe ga-sun managed to get out of there. she doesn't know for sure yet that he's dead and if she starts thinking about it too much it will completely ruin her.

then they actually see the ruins full of charcoal people statues, and it becomes significantly more difficult to believe that their little brother might still be alive. then they reopen the rift, have to fight a pride demon, and while getting thrown around, they see something horrifying familiar and scrabble around in the dirt to grab hold of what really looks like a charred ironbark dagger with some kind of inscription on it. and then they know for sure.

so ga-kei using "arav'assan" as an alias is as much a way of holding onto the memory of her brother (who she never mentions to anybody in the inquisition during the events of the main game) as it is dragging the corpse behind her to condemn herself for failing to protect him. which is a really awesome thing to define your identity for the next several years around

challenging the pavellan elf boyfriend who educates dorian on racism industrial complex by bravely stating that ga-sun actually has a concerningly large blind spot wrt dorian's prejudices and just glosses over all that bc it thinks he's pretty and doesn't want to think about or argue about politics. dorian has to be the one to point out to ga-sun that being noncommital about this whole inquisition thing doesn't actually change the fact that ga-sun wields a massive amount of political power at the moment

eloy surana: eloy is a fereldan rebellion history nerd. some of this can possibly be attributed to adaia tabris' influence on her young nephew. she wanted to hold onto a somewhat idealized view of her time as a night elf under loghain's command, and was fond of telling the kids about the heroics she'd seen/been a part of. with access to the circle's library, eloy became fascinated by the figures of loghain and the mage wilhelm sulzbacher, as people who would otherwise have been looked down upon, but managed to prove their value in ferelden's time of crisis and were rewarded for it.

so the dog gets named wilhelm sulzbarker (alistair provides the pun because he thinks the full name for the dog is way too formal) and eloy definitely feels some kind of way about the whole loghain archnemesis -> reluctant recruit thing. and the concept of her being the loghain to alistair's maric, in a sense.

seongmin hawke: shaved his head because of a bet in the army, much to leandra's consternation when her two children showed back up in lothering fleeing the darkspawn and her eldest is also fucking bald for some reason.

and then he only actually started to consider transitioning after carver's death, while they were traveling to kirkwall, when people started assuming the rough-looking fellow with the shaved head and beat-up armor who clearly was the leader of this little family unit must be the Man Of The House. which is a cool and normal way to approach your own gender identity probably

ga-sun lavellan: both very miscellaneous and kind of fucked up fact is that ga-sun is left-handed, so the progressive degeneration of the anchor hand/eventual amputation sucks that much more.

this is part of why, to dorian's mild dismay, it never really adjusts to regularly using the extremely expensive cutting-edge intricately enchanted prosthetic that he put a LOT of effort into designing and having made. the experience of having a left hand "back" that can't really manage the tasks it used its dominant hand for ends up being significantly more frustrating for ga-sun to experience than adapting to using the non-dominant hand that otherwise functions perfectly

dak-wai: also left-handed. This is because i, too, am left-handed.

this is in their tag but buried way back and it's very funny to me so i'm bringing it up again. for a while lucanis kept convincing himself and trying to convince the rest of the lighthouse crew that dak-wai might be ben-hassrath. like, listen. recruited by varric into an inquisition-related operation. (they were also recruited into the wardens by blackwall, but lucanis doesn't know this.) the inquisition was known for having achieved an alliance with the qunari, and believed to have collaborated with the ben-hassrath. dak-wai has a whole thing about not liking being referred to as either qunari or tal-vashoth. adds up to ????

this was dismissed by everyone except harding as lucanis being sleep-deprived and also clearly pissed off by dak-wai being extremely suspicious of the whole abomination thing. and then shathann accused them of being ben-hassrath as well bc they encouraged taash to connect with qunari culture and they were like. How are two people coming to this conclusion independently

it's literally dead in tragedy worldstate but honestly whenever i think for a little too long about ga-sun i'm like Wow becoming inquisitor completely ruined your life in the worst possible way. it is kind of inherently a life-ruining position but it really completely fucking ruins his life. he could see it coming and tried as hard as he could to avoid it and still fails
