Hi Kazu ^^ Could you give me some tips or links for drawing bent knees/other joints from different angles? Btw I love your art and I'm so sorry about the stealing :(
Okay, so honestly the best best for knees/joints/any body part is reference pics. I know there are a bunch of fancy reference collections all over the place, but I usually just Google it. Another thing that really helps me is to look at manga/other stylized art similar to the your art style; clean lines and seeing how real humans translate into 2D can be great inspiration.
As for actual tips, remember the lines! Knees are these weird bumpy things, and you can usually see a line where the knee cap is, and going down. Elbows are pretty sharp and also have the line thingy. Both the inside knee and elbow may have a tendon that stretches out. This is partially just me and my style and my over emphasizing of muscles and bones, but I like to exaggerate those, so again with reference pics, I like looking at really muscular/stringy people to get an idea of where those things go. Then, depending on who you’re drawing, you can flesh them out understanding where the underlying stuff is ^ ^
...But in all honesty, I’m absolutely HORRID at looking up proper references, and usually go “Meh, it looks somethin’ like that, looks human, movin’ on~” so don’t be me ;A;
Hope that helped!
I've only read the Neon Genesis Evangelion manga for the first time recently but apparently there are other series/anime about it. Could you tell me what they are called and if you think that they are absolutely necessary in the understanding of Evangelion as a whole?
If you are talking about the anime rendition of that manga, it too is called Neon Genesis Evangelion. This came out in 1995. Then there’s the movies which are also called Neon Genesis Evangelion, but are mostly called Rebuild of Evangelion in order to differentiate between the original series and the movies (which both are branded with the same name). As for what the series could mean in understanding Eva as a whole?
Now understanding Evangelion, the original series, and what it can ultimately mean as a whole is the hardest question to ask. It is ultimately up to the viewer to make sense of what is going on. Some may see it as a sort of coming of age story and some may not. However, neither of these ideas are wrong. By the same token, this makes none of the ideas factually right either. Anno has stated through an interview:
-Hideaki Anno, translated by Miyako Graham from 11/96 Newtype in Protoculture Addicts #43:"Evangelion is like a puzzle, you know. Any person can see it and give his/her own answer. In other words, we're offering viewers to think by themselves, so that each person can imagine his/her own world. We will never offer the answers, even in the theatrical version. As for many Evangelion viewers, they may expect us to provide the 'all-about Eva' manuals, but there is no such thing. Don't expect to get answers by someone. Don't expect to be catered to all the time. We all have to find our own answers." (evangelion.wikia)
The Rebuilds, however have a different quote for them. Also by Anno, a snippet of his announcement. The full version can be found here.
”Eva" is a story that repeats.It is a story where the main character witnesses many horrors with his own eyes, but still tries to stand up again.It is a story of will; a story of moving forward, if only just a little.It is a story of fear, where someone who must face indefinite solitude fears reaching out to others, but still wants to try. (animenewsnetwork.com)
Even though this quote is sometimes associated with Evangelion Timeloop Theories, officially speaking this quote is what helps us better understand the general spiel of the Rebuilds.
