Lizzo’s self esteem should not be seen as something rare or exceptional (though it’s great)
I just keep thinking that we frame fat girls who demonstrate this as ‘rare’ and ‘unusual’. Because it may be playing into the idea that TYPICAL FAT GIRLS are always body dysmorphic, obsess with dieting, hate themselves, etc... It plays to the default that fat girls are always like that.
Fuck even her and Gabby S. say that confidence is a day-to-day endeavor. It’s no one and done deal. Every day, you make a choice of how you feel. Some days, it’s easy peasy. Other days, you just kinda wanna hide — and that’s ok. That’s normal. You can have your down days; doesn’t mean you’re a fraud.
It’s a process, and it NEVER stops being a process. It’s a process for Lizzo, and Gabby, and any other fat celeb who has been praised for their confidence. It’s a process for the skinny, conventionally attractive girls. Guys too. EVERYBODY!!!
What I think we can ultimately take away from Lizzo and Gabby S. is that that degree of confidence is OBTAINABLE — period. We can get there too. It’s not a break the mold thing; we can get that. We can work and we can actually make it so.
It can happen, and WE CAN be happy.
