HAPPY BIRTHDAY GACKT!!!

This is really less about the story but: I imagine it’s hecking fun to play both the villain and the main love interest in the same show

This is a friggin classic and one of the very first things that got me into visual kei back as i was...12?Somewhere around 2003/2004? LONG AGO LOL!
I still love Gackto a lot. The older he gets, the better he looks. Like fine wine... xD
(I also miss his Malice Mizer times...these tight leather outfits...*heavy breathing)
It’s honestly frustrating how last-minute and half-baked Gaito’s redemption and atonement feel, given how we learn about his “tragic backstory” right at the end of the first arc.
Especially in the anime, Gaito’s loneliness is used as the justification for all the damage he has done to the underwater and human worlds, and that Sara is actually to blame for “manipulating him” to cause such. It tries to hammer in the point that Sara needs to take action for her responsibilities, which yes, I agree with, but it also shifts the blame on her so much that it makes Gaito look like he “didn’t know any better.” The arc ends with a “Stockholm syndrome”-like situation where Sara willingly goes back to Gaito’s castle so she can be with him, but it doesn’t feel like a proper atonement.
I much prefer the manga’s interpretation, where Sara got a grave wound from protecting Mitsuki-sensei from debris, and she sacrifices herself to seal Gackto (Gaito’s manga name) away, and Coco’s role isn’t as downplayed like in the anime.
Of course, the manga also tries to do a rushed redemption for Gackto, where he details his tragic backstory of growing up lonely, but it isn’t as overtly-emphasized like the anime. It’s pretty brief for what it is.
Personally, I’m not a fan of the plot point where Sara realizes she was actually in love with Gackto and decides to spend eternity with him, since I feel it’s sort of a “slap in the face” given the buildup of her and Mitsuki-sensei’s relationship, but I much prefer the more tragic take in the manga than what we got for the anime.
It’s really weird and off-putting that after Gackto was “sealed away,” he’s still able to exist in spirit to watch over Kaito and co., even possessing him at one point.
As such, it honestly doesn’t feel like he was really punished for his actions.
