Setsuna’s eyes flickered over, waiting to see Shinon’s phone light up. Planning Gaius’s birthday was hard enough when they were always together. At least with phones they could do it somewhat privately. Though Gaius probably suspected something. They weren’t good at being subtle.

Shinon’s phone never lit up though, and she frowned. Instead, Gaius’s phone lit up, two little notifications popping up one after the other. Setsuna’s eyes widened. No way.

She double checked her phone and sure enough, Gaius’s name sat at the top of the messages, not Shinon’s. Before she could delete them, movement caught her attention, and her head snapped up just in time to see Gaius pick up his phone.

“FUCK.”

Reveal || Gaius & Maribelle

Maribelle was carrying a tea tray with her across the camp. She figured it might be a nice treat for Gaius, who’d been stuck in the medical tent for quite a few days now. Seeing as he hadn’t many other acquaintances among the Shepherds yet, she and Lissa were his most frequent visitors...with Chrom checking in now and then as well, trying to make sure all his men were in top shape or on their way back to it.

She shuffled into the tent. It was a bit awkward to enter it with both hands occupied, but she managed fine. Out of habit, she did her normal looking around the tent before her gaze eventually landed on Gaius, sitting in his cot.

She smiled a little and walked over to set the tray down on the little table near him, gesturing to it. “I made some pumpkin tea today. And I found some tea cakes. I believe Stahl was the one who made them, but no one’s really had any yet...”

She paused to look around, trying to find the chair she’d moved nearby on one of her previous visits. The two had taken to having idle conversation whenever she was there to check on him. It was the least she could do, after all.

Frowning slightly when she found it had been moved again, she retrieved the chair and set it back near the cot, sighing as she took a seat. “How are you feeling today? The usual pain? Any new pain? Aches?”

Finally she actually looked at the thief. Something about his expression was off, he didn’t seem happy to see her as he’d been before, or perhaps he just had something on his mind.

“What’s wrong? Is the pain bad again? I can get you some more medicine if you need it...”

Gaius sighed as he was caught, moving so he was standing where Cherche could see him.

{❧} —- “Just me. I was going to wait until you were gone, but you didn’t really have any plans to leave for awhile did you?”

The cookie dough was making him hungry, but he wasn’t about to admit that.

“Not until I had taken care of this craving.” She confessed,  Grabbing a spoon she scooped some dough and held it out wards him.

“I’ve heard about how you get with sweets, so I probably shouldn’t have been as surprised as I was to find that you were in here. I suppose this could just be our little secret. Her biggest question now was if she was going to bake the remainder of the dough, or just eat it raw.

Going to the market was perhaps the least stressful job Dwyer ever had to partake in. Atop of Nova, the Troubadour's belt jingled of coin from a small bag he tied to it. The steed trotted eagerly, taking in the calming atmosphere as supposed to the bloody battlefield. The master, too, felt at relative ease. Even with the village bustling with activity, Dwyer wasn't at all bothered. He merely dismounted his horse and led him from stall to stall, slowly marking off the internal list he had created.

There wasn't much to pick up, only a few items here and there. He was almost done when someone ran by him, harshly bumping into his shoulder. Eyes landed upon a certain Ninja and Dwyer made haste into following him.

“Asugi! If there was anything you wanted, you could’ve told me before I left.”

Setsuna blinked as she stared at the table in front of her. Or, more correctly, stared at the little figure standing on the table before her.

All she had wanted was a place to sit, for just a moment. She hadn’t even had anything to drink, just wanted a place to rest her feet. And the next thing she knew, a tiny voice was calling her name, and THE NEXT thing she knew, a small Gaius was waving up at her from the table.

She stared a moment longer before shaking her head. “No. I’m too tired for this to be a thing I deal with.”

Birthday Surprise! (Gaius + Setsuna)

“Heeeey, Dollface!~” Gaius sang, knocking at her door. “I heard today was your special day, so I thought I’d just… Iunno… make you something?”

It was a lovely three-layered carrot cake with orange decorative ribbons and blue roses sprawled comfortably over some tasty buttercream icing. He wanted to make something that wasn’t quite as sweet as he would usually make things for her sake, but still good enough for them both to enjoy.

He’d worked hard on it, and hoped she’d like his present – baking was about all he knew how to do other than needlework, other small crafts and armed robbery, and was significantly more fun than both of those. You couldn’t EAT a throw pillow or a shiny gold watch, after all. But he was getting ahead of himself–

“Hey… You gonna open up or what? C'mon, Dollface – I was up all night making it just right for ya!”

Setsuna slowly opened her door. She had recognized Gaius’s yelling, it was hard not too, but she was distracted immediately by the large cake he held in his arms. She blinked a moment before her gaze flicked up to him and she snorted. “Must be easy for you to get gifts for people, hmm?”

She smiled and took a step back, allowing him the room to enter her quarters. She hadn’t expected Gaius to travel all this way just for her birthday (and it was that time again, wasn’t it? Time certainly moved quick when you didn’t pay attention.) Still, he seemed to manage to surprise her again.

“So what big occasion is enough for you to get someone something that isn’t a cake?” She asked jokingly. As he walked past into her room, she reached out and swiped a tiny bit of icing onto her finger. “Or is it that instead of things like wood and paper, you just have various sweet anniversaries?” Who even came up with those traditions, how cheap were they?

She closed her door as she licked the icing off her finger. “It’s good to see you though...”

Peace Again || Gaius & Maribelle

She woke up before Gaius, a bit groggy and dazed at first. It took her a moment to realize where she was, and she shifted slightly, reaching up to rub the sleep from her eyes before looking up at Gaius’ face.

He seemed to be in a deep sleep, though she couldn’t blame him. With what happened, he was likely more tired than she had been. Slowly she sat up and looked around. Birds were chirping outside and light was just starting to filter in. Glancing back at Gaius, she carefully moved his arm from where it had been around her waist and got up.

She looked around again, recalling all that had happened... A sort of shiver rose up her spine. She needed to prepare for the day-- but first she needed to dress and find Chrom and Lissa. They needed to hear about what had happened with the intruder in their camp.

Maribelle was glad for it being so early-- she was one of the few Shepherds actually awake at such an hour, but likely the only one venturing out of the tents. This meant, thankfully, no one would see her or ask questions. She stopped at her tent to quickly get dressed in her normal clothes and make herself decent before heading off to Chrom’s tent.

After explaining the situation to him-- Lissa at one point joining in-- they started to arrange for changing her tent. Chrom had offered to help move things, and they managed to find Libra awake who was glad to help as well.

Before they went off, she asked Lissa to check on Gaius, just to make sure his wound was alright...

Of course, the princess did so, but ended up barging into the thief’s tent without much warning. “How ya doing, sleepyhead?” She spoke perhaps a little louder than needed.

Paths Cross Again

There’d been an ambush. Maribelle and the other Shepherds were all the Ylissitol palace, and Marth had warned them of what was to come. Though it was a bit rushed, they were ready to battle. 

She’d made sure Lissa was safe before rushing into the fray to help Chrom and the others. She was to stay close to Emmeryn’s room-- helping heal everyone and try to keep these mysterious brigands from breaking through their forces to the Exalt.

As the battle went on, it seemed to be all in their favor. Since they’d been tipped off, it was easy to hold back the enemy forces.

In the midst of battle, casting her magic to help heal an ally soldier, something caught Maribelle’s eye: a familiar flash of red.

Turning on her heal to try and make sure it wasn’t some trick of the light, her breath stopped for a moment when she saw who it was. Gaius, yet again. What was he doing here? Her jaw set. Maybe he’d been hired again for more dirty work. She’d strike him down herself before letting him anywhere near the Exalt-- he’d caused enough pain and trouble as it was.

She was ready to recruit some nearby soldier to aid her, but then she saw him near Chrom and...they were talking. After a few moments the two were fighting together. She was appalled-- didn’t he know this man was a criminal?

She shook her head. She needed to stay focused. Even if she didn’t approve herself, she had to trust Chrom’s judgement for now. She knew that logically the more help they had, the better off they were... But she still felt uneasy knowing Gaius had run into her life yet again.
