A man pops through a portal with a grin. "Well its finally time i get to see you, youre as glowy as Melanie has said."

Remy snorted. "Well, I make a good nigh'ligh' now. Y'must be Allen, den?"

There was a bar in the tiny town he was staying in. The folks here weren't horrible, as far as he'd seen. Only one really big mutant-hater had bother to try and mess with him. Easy enough to ignore.

So here he was, at the bar with a half-empty glass, dressed in casual clothes that weren't even his. They'd been a gift, from a spunky old man he'd stayed with for a few weeks when Gambit first returned to Earth from the stars. Belonged to the man's nephew (whom he'd raised as his son when the boy's parents died), left behind when the nephew went to college.

Remy heaved a sigh. He had a lot to atone for, more than what community work could fix. But he was trying. Placing his head on the bar, he groaned.

So many dead. And all his fault. How could he be so stupid? Why hadn't he stopped it sooner?

Guess I need a reintroduction, non? De name's Gambit, nice t' meetcha. M'be you recognize me, m'be y'don'. Don't expect ya t'.

Used t' look normal, wit' actual hair, bu' dat was 'fore ol' Galactus decided he wan'ed me fer his herald. De big man ramped me powers up, an' now I look like dis. No' half-bad, ain't it?

I'm back now, go' 'im t' release me from duty. Can' undo de t'ings I did, bu' I can try t' atone fer dem.

This particular comic takes place in an alternate dimension (hence the What If? title). After the Morlock Massacure, the sewer dwellers left Gambit to die. Galactus took notice of his thieving skills and 'beamed him up'. After giving him power of cosmic proportions (and dealing with a rebellious Remy), Galactus ordered his new Herald to steal a planet from the Collector.

The planet wound up being a copy of the planet where Galactus got his start. But it was lifeless, Remy couldn't feel any bioenergy coming from it. A furious Galactus banished the Collector to the empty planet.

Then, Gambit made a comment about not being able to return to home after a big transformation, something they had in common. Galactus took pity on him, and released him from his duties to return to the Earth.

Which is where he is now, trying to atone for the murders he feels responsible for.
