Character Design
So I’ve been working on a game for the past week with a friend in Montreal. She’s an animator and we’re planning on making a small game. We’ve been working on the game document all of last week and are finally starting to head into the concept and development of the game. Here, is the process of one of the characters.
Firstly we needed to decide the silhouette of the character. The character herself is fairly strong willed, and we waned to show that in her character. All the silhouettes except the first were modeled in some way or another from characters in TV that I thought were strong, interesting but 3 dimensional.
The 3rd silhouette was chosen.
Values
Now that we had the basic shape of the character, we wanted to start finding her character in the attire. The third and fourth design were chosen for the next stage.
Styles
On our design document we had a few pages on inspiration, and style. We did a few of these in different styles. In the end, however, we felt as though some of the designs were too soft and round. While she’s not an anti hero or antagonist. A big part of her character, her strong willed approach, was important to highlight to the players. So, with that we decided to go back in with 1 and 3 from the left, and 1 on the right and give her some more angles.
Variations
With the designs from the top, I did a few more illustrations of each design, but with more straight lines. 1-3 I used the styles from above and made slight variations on the outfits. For the final 2 designs, we chose our favorite parts of the others and made some other variations. Which is where we found our final design
Colour
With the colour, we enjoyed all of the designs but we thought that the outfit of 6 and the hair of 4 looked the best. So we made a final design with those together.
However, we were concerned with the vibrancy vs the background sketches we have done so we made a few slight colour adjustments with a main key colour of the background in the day and at night which you can see below!
The third design was chosen for the day.
For night, we decided that 2 and 3 were great, depending on the light.
And that’s all for now, hopefully we will get a full illustration of the character with her style and face drawn so you can see her fully. Until then!
Idle of our blind bowman in Legend of Keepers
The old Cairn Bolete was pretty skinny and the standard mushroom shape. So I suggested a stouter stem that correspond more with the boletus family.
Besides just the arrangement of the clusters, sometimes the lore of the asset provides clues to expand and show more information on what kind of situation or location this asset could be in.
