Apple's Smartwatch Can Be A Games Platform – And Here's Why
The words “mobile gaming” conjure up images of flinging birds, swapping numbers, and matching candies on a phone or tablet. Or perhaps you imagine Link swinging a sword on a Nintendo 3DS or Sackboy running across a PS Vita screen.
Games are a remarkably agile medium – they can squeeze in anywhere. Whenever a new digital platform emerges, whether its a tablet, augmented reality headset or smart home security system, games are never far behind. Humans, like most animals, are natural players.
With the gradual, lumbering rise of the smartwatch, however, games have so far played a limited role. The stores on the Pebble and Android Wear devices are mostly filled with fitness and convenience applications, which is sensible considering the form factor of these things: they’re small, they’re attached to you and they have accelerometers to track movement. Hence, dozens of gamified jogging apps.
While smartwatch sales numbers aren’t too promising today — just under 7 million smartwatches were sold in 2014, according to independent research company Smartwatch Group — that’s bound to change. The Apple Watch, due out April 24, is predicted to sell somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 million units in its first year. LG, Motorola, Huawei and others are supporting the wearable Android Wear platform. The Pebble Time watch is the most-funded Kickstarter ever, currently topping a whopping $18 million with two weeks to go.
Love it or hate it, when Apple enters a market, it brings with it an earthquake of hype and an accompanying tsunami of fresh developer interest. So how could things change with smartwatch games in the near future?
There are historical precedences here. Nintendo’s old Game & Watch titles – and indeed that whole generation of simple LCD games, from Grandstand’s Caveman to Mattel’s Dungeons and Dragons – were based around simple and amusing interactions, where form was as important as experience. Casio even made basic LCD game watches, as did Nelsonic, with its cute Zelda title. Smart watches could bring this back.
Most smartwatches aren’t really designed with gaming in mind, though, and they often pack less sophisticated play experiences, cautions Steinberg. But he thinks a company like Apple, which has made a killing with games on its other devices, could change that.
“[Apple] may help bridge the gap and elevate wrist-based gaming to widespread popularity as more developers flock to take advantage of these devices and bring novel play experiences along with them,” he says.
Another obvious use for the smartwatch will be as a second or even third screen for a console, PC or tablet title – either imparting personal information to the player while participating in the main game, or allowing them to take an element of that game with them wherever they go.
“Great mobile game design delivers bite-sized entertainment that can quickly engage players anytime, anywhere,” Gibeau continues. “And with smartwatches and wearables, it’s easy to imagine experiences that take your daily activity or movement into account, letting people literally play all day long.”
