The nannybot is cleaning the bathroom with a mechanical hum of a programmed-in nursery rhyme, not taking into account the likelihood of the little boy climbing out of his playpen and toddling into Alex’s ‘study room’. He’s not really allowed in there on his own, but the large screen in there is a good source of entertainment, especially when Alex is showing the boy calming videos against a yellow background to help him sleep.
Teddy’s seen Alex tap away at the keyboard before, but it’s up too high on the desk, and he can’t move the chair the way he wants, so instead he tugs the old keyboard to the floor and scoots back as far as possible so the craning of his neck is not too much. He’s still learning the alphabet, so his approximate guesses at words that’d actually help are still wide of the mark. He taps and slaps away regardless, enjoying the imitation more than working on his goal.
There’s an unfamiliar noise, a sort of booping noise. The screen changes from the search Teddy was fooling around with, the screen turns blue, sort of staticky, and a girl’s face shows up, but only a picture, not a call like with Mili.
She asks questions in soft voice, but Teddy doesn’t answer, staying silent, beyond unsure of how to answer her anyway. He’s not even meant to be in the study room. Eventually, the girl disconnects, but not without silence after unanswered questions, and then a quiet gasp. It unnerves him, although he’s not familiar with the feeling, and he decides to say nothing about this to Alex, or the nannybot, and instead toddles back to the playpen.
The nannybot’s none the wiser, but Alex -- who sees the keyboard pulled out of place -- does wonder.

‘ don’t mind me, i am just... very drunk. yes, very drunk. ‘ her silver flask was wiggled in her hand tantalizingly, glinting in the moonlight. it had been her only solace through it all and her constant companion, leaving most nights to end up somewhat like this one. ‘ you are so... fuzzy. ‘

Two screens face each other in the arcade. It’s closed for the night - or rather the early morning. It’s an arcade bar, one of those cool hip places where millennials and genX-ers go to feel nostalgia while awkwardly fumbling through first dates. A place where you can play Pacman and drink microbrew while old episodes of The Ewoks cartoon play on TVs in the background.
Polybius lights up, triggered by the spark of the TV screen turning on, thinking it’s the presence of a person. The game is on demo mode and begins even without the insertion of a token. It remains quiet, waiting.
‘ maybe you’ve heard of me. one of the biggest horror fiction writers of the twentieth century? disappeared mysteriously for twenty years? ‘ well, most people didn’t know about the latter half given he hadn’t exactly reintroduced himself to the world quite yet. he had some time to find an agent who could sort out that whole complicated business for him.

“Good morning, Detritus Removal Unit no. 701. How may I assist you?” When HAL says the name it’s very stiff. It’s new him and it doesn’t sound as comfortable or natural (as natural as an AI’s voice can be) as his other speech. Still, HAL uses the formal name. He will continue to use it unless asked otherwise. Giving nicknames of his own isn’t in his programming. Possibly because it may not always be appreciated, but mostly due to lack of creative freedom.
@gangofgeniuses asked: “What’s wrong with tomorrow?” from dee to citrus?
“Tomorrow is too far away! That’s what’s wrong.” He gets poetic for a moment, not knowing why. He hates waiting, never learning the virtue of patience.
