I buried my friend today.

This amazing powerhouse of a man, Jerry Gant, cultivated a community of art & black empowerment for over 30 years. He worked in graffiti, clothing redesign, metal work, paint & was also a phenomenal spoken word artist. Everything Jerry Gant did was art and he touched so many people with his expression of love.

I was honored to sing at his service “The Makings of You” by Curtis Mayfield with Jamale Davis (upright base) & Ause (guitar). Our mayor, Ras Baraka, sang along & fed me some of the lines when I got choked up & forgot myself.

True to form, at the end of the service graffiti artists were asked to tag his casket. While Maurice Chestnut tap danced his heart out, artists surrounded his casket with spray cans & Sharpies to make a send off worthy of such a standout artist as Jerry Gant.

I will miss my friend & mentor. Newark will never forget Jerry Gant. I am reinvigorated to create and honor my new ancestors in everything I do.
