A Pale Shadow is long, slow and sad. Not exactly what every festival is pining for these days. So I’m grateful for platforms like NoBudge, where difficult work that requires close attention to detail can be seen. Work that does not pander to mainstream audiences with easy answers and obvious characters. In 2011, my best friends and creative partners (Gary Lauten and Carl Bird McLaughlin) made three such films. A Pale Shadow, Life on Earth and No Quarter, none of which played anywhere. Regardless, we are proud of the films and the themes we explored. Themes of redemption, loss, faith and family that we consider honest, important and confrontational in their seriousness.
