Sneak Peak At The Journey Of One Of The Most Celebrated Designers Of South Africa
Gavin Rajah is one such personality whose constant vigour to become something in life has inspired many to work hard and do something good with their life. Gavin began his journey of designing when he was studying law at the University of Cape Town. The fashion guru himself proclaimed in an interview that to raise some extra money, he started selling clothes to people living in residencies. His designs captured the attention of many and soon he started getting special requests to design evening wear. This was the first time he designed clothes.
The difficulty of earning a name and the lack of finances didn't deter the creative mind from taking a less trodden path. Gavin worked day and night and started his own label in 2000 by taking loan from his parents. In his first show, he came up with a line of clothes to attract potential buyers and boutiques. He took the first step of his career by outsourcing seamstresses and spinning brilliant designs. Gavin once recalling his journey, told that his label did not get any big breaks. He achieved success by going through a tough learning curve.
According to him, his journey was more difficult than his peers since he had never been to a fashion school. He took the brave decision to start a label with just basic fashion knowledge. But like they say experience teaches you everything, Gavin soon started coming up with seamless and flawlessly designed dresses.
Today Gavin believes that he has not saturated the local market but has registered a brand on his name that results from a fine balance of creativity and professionalism. His hard work and perseverance finally paid off and he is now a renowned South African entrepreneur of modern times.
