I’m exhausted seeing major publications fuck this shit up so here we go.
(actual/real/true) gender: a self-chosen label for your own experience in a world that divides people into social categories called gender
assigned gender/sex: the gender adults told you you were since you were a child (this is NOT a shorthand description of what someone’s body is like!)
gender roles: social rules and stereotypes about the way people “should” divide their interests, work, appearance, habits and abilities along masculine/feminine lines
physical sex characteristics/genitals/sex organs: the body parts involved in reproduction, or, sometimes, the body parts people attach gendered expectations to
“Male”/ “female” sex organs/characteristics/etc: not a thing! people of any gender can and do have every kind of body part - sometimes combined with body parts you gender differently! Just say the parts you mean and skip the inaccurate euphemisms bc they do not apply
sex/biological sex: a rough, inaccurate, and outdated shoehorning of people with a wide range of physical sex characteristics into two (rarely, three) constructed social categories as a ridiculous attempt to pretend everything is binary and gender is biological. Skip it. You can talk about gender as relevant and body parts as relevant but please give up on trying to assign gender to body parts, it is a Bad Idea.
intersex: intersex people’s bodies (naturally and without intervention) differ from the constructed “biological sex” template via hormones, internal or external organs, or chromosomes. just like anyone else, intersex people can be trans or cis.
trans/transgender: transgender people are a different gender than their assigned gender. just like anyone else, trans people may have any of a wide variety of body parts.
cis: cis people still claim the gender they were assigned at birth. just like anyone else, cis people may have any of a wide variety of body parts.
