society seems really caught up in gender-neutrality when I honestly believe it would be way more productive to focus on gender-inclusivity. it may seem ironic given my username, but finding ways to acknowledge and celebrate the bredth of gender rather than trying to flatten it into one single neutral point would probably make people feel a lot more in harmony with society at large and encourage a lot more cooperation.

eventually, I would love to see a world where gender doesn't matter. but I know it matters to people. To a lot of people. And finding ways to acknowledge that without enforcing gendered roles is probably going to help a lot more than erasing it entirely.

I live in a pretty conservative area and went to the pool today and saw that the place has been renovated and now all the bathrooms are gender neutral and have a toilet symbol instead of gendered stick figures!!!!

It felt so good seeing that small detail of inclusiveness!!

I want to talk more in-depth about neutrality as a stance when it comes to gender because this usage of the word is making me question myself, and questions need probing.

Like... Why was maverique coined as a way to say that the coiner's gender is not neutral? Why is the lack of neutrality important? What is the difference between neutral: not masculine or feminine, and maverique: also.... not masculine or feminine? In most discussions I've seen involving maverique, the neutrality is seen as passivity, a sense of being non-committal, a state of not having distinct characteristics. But neutral as a gender quality is simply not masculine or feminine, and doesn't describe a stance (though it does describe positionality in a way.)

Love (read: hate) when people try to tell me about gender systems/gender neutrality in latin based languages when they have not studied a Single Latin Language. My bestie in CHRIST my degree is in SPANISH. I can read and write in Portuguese and Italian. I studied latin in elementary school like a fuckin WEIRDO NERD. I am also incredibly unbothered by gender As A Concept. Shut up shut up shut up I do in fact KNOW MORE THAN YOU (about this specific thing)

One time someone tried to make alum gender neutral by putting alumx. Because she was in a sorority and they use alumnae instead of alumni. Which is fine. But alum has the gendered ending cut off already, so its already gender neutral. Also latin HAS A NEUTER FORM. literally its alumnum.

Not to mention i have not met a single person who natively speaks any latin based language who actually appreciates the gender neutral x a bunch of gringo ass linguists in Harvard came up with. Throws off the natural rhythm of the language. X as gender neutrality is very much an anglo idea. Fuck offffff. Just use e as your gender ending. Its already a linguistic feature in Spanish and Portuguese and italian. Its neutral. Latine sounds so much better than latinx.

Side bar: there's a linguistic phenomenon where people who speak a heavily gendered language have stronger ideas of What Gender Means than people who don't. I am the exception. I have the same gender as a chair. A dress is masculine but a men's dress shirt is feminine. But pants are masculine and skirts are feminine. Literally who gives a shit.
