Rocking The Up-tempo

Aaliyah talks more about her new self-titled album.

Gene: Are there any new sounds on this album? Did you go in any new direction?  Aaliyah: Um, it still has my signature style, but more of a rock flair to it. I feel each song has something you don't normally hear today.

Gene: What are you more excited about? Your music or your movies?  Aaliyah: Both. [Laughs] Equally.

Gene: What was the one thing you wanted from this album?  Aaliyah: Just think about love. Most songs are about love. I got happy and sad love songs together.

Gene: Do you prefer up-tempo songs oppose to ballads?  Aaliyah: I love up-tempo. I like to dance so I was very adamant about getting a lot of up-tempo jams.

Gene: So what's your favorite up-tempo song on the album?  Aaliyah: "Loose Rap" is hot. It's also a couple of years old like "I Care 4 U." I hope "Loose Rap" becomes a single. Heck, the whole album could be released as singles.

Gene: Lately, your videos have been visually out there. I'm sure the next one is going to be something, too. Are videos very important to you?  Aaliyah: They are extremely important as well as a promotional tool. When you turn on the radio and you hear that song, first thing you think about is the video. If that video isn't good, then it will hurt the song. Now if the song isn't really great, but the video is really hot, it'll help the song. Videos just proves everything you are.

Gene: Do you enjoy making them?  Aaliyah: Yeah, they're fun. It's always a challenge, okay, what am I going to do? What hasn't been done yet?

Gene: You're the kind of artist who releases a song and it has to be heard a few times before it's a smash. Does that make you nervous?  Aaliyah: No, I always want to be true to myself. I do like things that are very different. If my fans love me, they are going to love what I'm feeling. I hope they can get on the same page with me. Just give it the opportunity. It happened with the song, "One In A Million," it took awhile to catch on. I have a lot of faith in the fans. @GeneGeter.com
