Mosquitoes in winter: where do they go? / Zanzare in inverno: dove vanno?

Some of you may have asked, perhaps observing that, during the winter period, you don't need to worry about an open mosquito nets!

What happens to mosquitoes in winter?

Mosquitoes are, unfortunately, synonymous with the beautiful season: like all insects, they are not able to regulate their body heat and need an outside temperature above 20°C to live and reproduce.

The ways in which they spend the winter, however, change according to the species.

Common mosquitoes

During the winter months, the female of common mosquito (culex pipiens or anopheles) enter a lethargic state, called diapause, typical of many insects, crustaceans and snails, and even some mammals!

At the end of the season, you can already notice how many of these start to lose appetite and sting less than before: they are preparing to face lethargy!

As explained by Wikipedia, diapause is "a phase of spontaneous arrest of development in which the organism is inactive, does not feed and does not move, ie the metabolic activity is reduced." Common mosquitoes, therefore, also pass up to 6 months hidden in our homes, sheltered from extreme cold, but without biting us any more: you could then see some of them asleep while tidying up a wardrobe or a garret.

Tiger mosquito

The tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus), on the other hand, spends the winter in the form of eggs. The adult specimens, in fact, lay the last eggs of the summer season in damp and sheltered places, such as water containers, saucers, cisterns, ponds, or marshes ... in this form, the eggs can withstand temperatures even below of zero!

How to fight mosquitoes in winter?

If you have read our previous articles, you know that even a few specimens are enough to ensure the exponential growth of the mosquito population in a short time, so not much can be done to combat them in winter. As for tiger mosquitoes, care should be taken at the end of summer to clean and dry the vases, watering cans and all those places where water can accumulate.

While at home, for common mosquitoes, you can try spraying insecticide in those sheltered and unreachable places, such as the top and back of the cabinets, or in the attics and closets.

Moreover, you could take advantage to choose a new model of mosquito net or take care of the maintenance and cleaning of the one already installed, so as to arrive prepared for the first heat!

Che fine fanno le zanzare in inverno?

Le zanzare sono purtroppo sinonimo della bella stagione: come tutti gli insetti non sono in grado di regolare il loro calore corporeo e hanno bisogno di una temperatura esterna superiore ai 20°C per vivere e riprodursi.

Le modalità con cui trascorrono l’inverno, però, cambia a seconda della specie.

Zanzare comuni

Le femmine di zanzara comune (culex pipiens o anopheles), durante i mesi invernali, entrano in uno stato letargico, detto diapausa tipico di molti insetti, crostacei e lumache, e perfino di alcuni mammiferi!

A fine stagione si può già notare come molte di queste inizino a perdere appetito e pungere meno di prima: si stanno preparando ad affrontare il letargo!

Come viene spiegato da Wikipedia, la diapausa è "una fase di arresto spontaneo dello sviluppo in cui l'organismo è inattivo, non si alimenta e non si muove, ossia l'attività metabolica si riduce”. Le zanzare comuni, quindi, passano anche fino a 6 mesi nascoste nelle nostre case, al riparo dal freddo estremo, ma senza pungerci più: potreste quindi, scorgerne qualcuna un po’ addormentata, mentre sistemate un armadio o una soffitta.

Zanzara tigre

La zanzara tigre (Aedes albopictus), invece, trascorre l’inverno sotto forma di uova. Gli esemplari adulti, infatti, depongono le ultime uova della stagione estiva in luoghi umidi e riparati, come contenitori d’acqua, sottovasi, cisterne, stagni, laghetti o acquitrini... in questa forma, le uova possono sopportare temperature anche al di sotto dello zero!

Come combattere le zanzare in inverno?

Se avete letto i nostri articoli precedenti, sapete che bastano anche solo pochi esemplari per garantire una crescita esponenziale e in breve tempo della popolazione di zanzare, quindi in inverno non si può fare molto per combatterle. Per quanto riguarda le zanzare tigre occorre prestare attenzione a fine estate di pulire e asciugare bene i vasi, gli annaffiatoi e tutti quei posti dove può accumularsi dell’acqua.

Mentre in casa, per le zanzare comuni, si può provare a spruzzare dell’insetticida in quei posti riparati e poco raggiungibili, come la parte alta e il retro degli armadi, o nelle soffitte e sgabuzzini.

Inoltre, potreste approfittare per scegliere un nuovo modello di zanzariera o occuparvi della manutenzione e pulizia di quella già installata, in modo tale da arrivare preparati ai primi caldi!

Fixed frame mosquito nets: what are the differences between Ultima and Unifix models? / Zanzariere a pannello: quali differenze ci sono tra i modelli Ultima e Unifix?

In some recent articles, we have talked about two models of fixed frame mosquito nets: Ultima, used in an impressive installation in Kazakhstan, and Unifix. Many asked us the differences between these two models, apparently so similar! Let's see them together.

Why choose a fixed frame mosquito net?

The simplicity of installation and the total lack of maintenance, combined with the low cost, are the strong points of this type of mosquito nets. Furthermore, Unifix and Ultima also share a single aluminum profile size, unlike other systems on the market that use multiple profile sizes, depending on the depth of the frame, and both need no screws. No need, therefore, to pierce the window frame.

The differences between the Ultima and Unifix models

Now let's see the differences:

Installation: the Ultima mosquito net leans against the frame of the window and goes outwards until the clips snap into the upper part of the mosquito net. Unifix, on the other hand, should be projected towards the outside and then recalled towards oneself. The movement is less agile, but it allows to have only four thin plates that hold the mosquito net instead of an aluminum edge along the whole perimeter of the window, and this leads to the next point.

Compatibility with doors and windows: Ultima is indicated above all for PVC windows, compared to aluminum or wooden windows. The reason is that the tab that runs along the entire perimeter of the frame constitutes an extra thickness that only windows and doors with generous rubber gaskets can absorb. Unifix is suitable for any window.

View from outside: the Ultima mosquito net protrudes about 18 mm from the window frame. Depending on the type of frame, it can appear from the outside to the edge of the window frame or protrude by almost two centimeters with a lower aesthetic appearance. Unifix, on the other hand, always appears to adhere to the window frame almost to blend in with it: its profile is only 25mm wide, ensuring a minimal and pleasant visual impact.

Profile cutting: Ultima is assembled with a profile cut at 45° while Unifix is cut at 90°. This means no visible plastic parts for Ultima and plastic corner brackets visible with Unifix.

Price: Unifix is a decidedly lighter profile and therefore lower in cost, compared to Ultima.

Perché scegliere una zanzariera a telaio fisso?

La semplicità d’installazione e la totale mancanza di manutenzione, unite al basso costo, sono i punti forti di questo tipo di zanzariere. Unifix e Ultima, inoltre, condividono anche una sola misura del profilo in alluminio, a differenza di altri sistemi diffusi sul mercato che usano più misure di profilo in funzione della profondità del telaio, ed entrambe non necessitano di nessuna vite. Nessun bisogno, quindi, di forare il vano luce, il telaio o l’anta del serramento.

Le differenze tra i modelli Ultima e Unifix

Vediamo ora le differenze:

Posa in opera: la zanzariera Ultima si appoggia al telaio del serramento e si spinge verso l’esterno fino a far scattare le clip nella parte alta della zanzariera. Unifix, invece, va proiettata verso l’esterno e poi richiamata verso di sé. La manovra è meno agile, ma permette di avere solo quattro lamierini che trattengono la zanzariera anziché un bordo di alluminio lungo tutto il perimetro della finestra e questo porta al punto successivo.

Compatibilità con serramenti: Ultima è indicata soprattutto per serramenti in PVC, rispetto alle finestre in alluminio o in legno. La ragione è che la linguetta che corre lungo tutto il perimetro del telaio costituisce uno spessore in più che solo i serramenti dotati di generose guarnizioni in gomma possono assorbire. Unifix è adatta a qualsiasi serramento.

Vista dall’esterno: La zanzariera Ultima sporge di circa 18 mm dal telaio del serramento. In funzione del tipo di telaio può apparire dall’esterno a filo del serramento oppure sporgere di quasi due centimetri con una resa estetica inferiore. Unifix, invece, appare sempre aderente al telaio della finestra quasi a confondersi con il medesimo: il suo profilo è largo solo 25mm, garantendo un impatto visivo minimo e gradevole.

Taglio dei profili: Ultima è assemblata con un taglio dei profili a 45° mentre Unifix a 90°. Ciò significa niente parti plastiche a vista per Ultima e squadrette angolari in plastica visibili con Unifix.

Prezzo: Unifix è un profilo decisamente più leggero e quindi dal costo inferiore, rispetto a Ultima.

A fly will save us all! / Una mosca ci salverà!

Well, we at Genius and Blinds have made war on insects our job! And yet, after this news, perhaps it will no longer disturb us that a fly decides to approach us!

Raising flies for a better future

For Keiran Whitaker, the annoying buzz of the fly is the soundtrack of a more sustainable future: Whitaker's Entocycle company cultivates a particular type of flies, Hermetia illucens, better known as a black soldier fly. All this happens in a specialized laboratory a few steps from Tower Bridge in central London and within a year, wants to send them all over the country.

In Italy, the research group led by Andrea Antonelli of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is creating a pilot industrial plant for the breeding and fractionation on an industrial scale of larvae of the soldier fly.

A nice fly

The black soldier fly is not an ordinary insect: it’s larger than the average common fly but very... more lazy! He lives just few days, eats nothing, so he doesn't need a mouth or digestive system, which means he can't bite. It is not a disease carrier. And to be honest, it doesn't even fly that much! The name "soldier" is given because it literally takes out all the larvae of other insects, including the very annoying house fly, which infests our homes.

In short, they seem almost nice!

Their, and our, resource? The larvae.

The larvae of these flies are the next big thing in terms of sustainability. They can be dehydrated and used to feed pets, they can replace fish meal in the diet of fish and farm animals (and thus help protect the oceans from over-exploitation), they can be used instead of soy used in feed, thus saving the rainforests and land ... Bearing in mind that pet food is responsible for a quarter of the environmental impact of overall meat production, it is an excellent step towards sustainability.

But what do black soldier fly larvae eat?

This small and very lazy insect already seems very useful, but its power itself is the real revolution!

Black soldier fly larvae are able to digest all types of human waste without generating excessive greenhouse gases:

they are able to reduce a mountain of organic waste from 30 to 55% in volume in a short time, chronometer in hand.

It would therefore be perfect to transform urban organic waste and large-scale food scraps into biodiesel, feed, fertilizers.

Alternative... plastic!

It’s magic! The larvae of the black soldier fly can be processed and transformed into a sort of plastic material, absolutely biodegradable!

Final surprise

And there is more ... even if you will like this less!

The young South African researcher Leah Bessa of Stellenbosch University shows in a video how one can eat excellent "alternative milk" ice cream but made by the larvae.

Furthermore, they were used in bread and biscuits. All without lactose and gluten, of course.

Allevare mosche per un futuro migliore

Per Keiran Whitaker il fastidioso ronzio della mosca è la colonna sonora di un futuro più sostenibile: la compagnia Entocycle coltiva un tipo particolare di mosche, Hermetia illucens, più nota come mosca nera soldato. Tutto questo avviene in un laboratorio specializzato a pochi passi dal Tower Bridge nel centro di Londra ed entro un anno, vuole spedirli in tutto il Paese.

In Italia, il gruppo di ricerca guidato da Andrea Antonelli dell'Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia sta creando un impianto industriale pilota per l’allevamento e il frazionamento su scala industriale di larve della mosca soldato.

Una mosca… simpatica

La mosca nera soldato non è un insetto ordinario: è più grande della mosca comune media ma molto... più pigra! Vive pochi giorni, non mangia nulla, quindi non ha bisogno di bocca o sistema digerente, il che significa che non può mordere. Non è vettore di malattie. E per dirla tutta, non vola nemmeno così tanto! L'appellativo “soldato” è dato perché fa letteralmente fuori tutti le larve degli altri insetti, compresa la fastidiosissima mosca domestica, che infesta le nostre abitazioni.

Insomma, sembrano quasi simpatiche!

Le larve di mosca come alimento per animali

La loro, e la nostra, risorsa? Le larve.

Le larve di queste mosche sono la prossima grande novità in termini di sostenibilità. Possono essere disidratate e usate per nutrire gli animali domestici, possono sostituire la farina di pesce nella dieta di pesci e animali d'allevamento (e quindi aiutare a proteggere gli oceani dallo sfruttamento eccessivo), possono essere utilizzati al posto della soia utilizzata nei mangimi, salvando così i terreni le foreste pluviali… Tenendo presente che il pet food è responsabile di un quarto dell’impatto ambientale della produzione complessiva di carne, è un ottimo passo in avanti verso la sostenibilità.

Ma cosa mangiano le larve di mosca nera soldato?

Questo piccolo e pigrissimo insetto sembra già molto utile, ma la sua stessa alimentazione è la vera rivoluzione!

Le larve di mosca nera soldato sono in grado di digerire tutti i tipi di rifiuti umani senza generare eccessivi gas serra:

sono in grado di ridurre una montagna di rifiuti organici dal 30 al 55% di volume in poco tempo, cronometro alla mano.

Sarebbe quindi perfetta per trasformare rifiuti organici urbani e scarti alimentari della grande distribuzione in biodiesel, mangimi, fertilizzanti.

Plastica… alternativa

Magia! Le larve della mosca nera soldato possono essere lavorate e trasformate in una sorta di materiale plastico, assolutamente biodegradabile!

Sorpresa finale

E c’è di più… anche se questo forse vi piacerà meno!

La giovane ricercatrice sudafricana Leah Bessa della Stellenbosch University dimostra in un filmato come si possa mangiare dell'ottimo gelato al “latte alternativo” ma fatto proprio dalle larve.

Inoltre, sono state usate nel pane e nei biscotti. Tutto senza lattosio e senza glutine, naturalmente.

Ultima ... in Kazakhstan / Ultima... in Kazakistan

Ultima is the name of a fixed panel mosquito net model of Genius and Blinds, used for an innovative installation built near Kapchagay, a place on the Ili River near Almaty, in Kazakhstan.

An unusual request

At the beginning of 2019 the Company Domus Almaty, the Kazakh representative of Genius and Blinds, receives from a local customer an order of 450 fixed panel mosquito nets of about 50 cm per side: a rather bizarre request, given that the fixed panels are considered a low-tech product mounted in contexts where design and performance are not decisive. And above all, 450 pieces all the same... well, it seemed a bit unrealistic!

A creative and durable installation

This bizarre order, however, was not a misunderstanding! The 450 Ultima panels have, in fact, been applied to the walls of a luxurious fishing shed, instead of glass windows.

But why the panel mosquito nets?

The "shed" is located in a particular climatic area: the temperature fluctuates between -40°C in winter, making the area inaccessible, at + 40°C in summer. This thermal excursion has made sure that the winding and sliding mechanisms of the mosquito nets previously assembled have been irretrievably damaged (during the summer of 2018 the nets have even melted!).

The architect Tskhay Oleg Yenovich, in charge of the renovation, has therefore opted for a solution that is as simple as it's reliable: the repetition of the module on all the facades of the building, using a product without perishable parts or engines that can fail. The Ultima profiles with aluminum or fiberglass nets, allow, in fact, to face environments with extreme climatic conditions and temperature excursions, without being damaged.

A mosquito net swing door as an entrance

The passage between the inside and the outside is guaranteed by the simple Araknis swing door mosquito net, also from the Genius and Blinds range, equipped with an intermediate reinforcement bar and a lower band for opening with the foot. Thanks to the absence of moving parts, springs or counterweights (except the suspension hinges), the Araknis door, like the Ultima panels, lends itself very well to use in extreme climatic and environmental conditions.

The result of the restructuring can be seen in the images on this page, demonstrating how excellent management of competence and creativity can express all the potential of a simple product, obtaining aesthetic and functional performance entirely comparable to much more sophisticated models.

Kazakhstan as a new basin of creativity

Kazakhstan has pleasantly surprised us: since 1991, this nation has made extensive modernization efforts, which can be grasped by the avant-garde architecture of the larger cities centers such as Almaty or the capital Nur-Sultan (the former Astana) where we remember, the edition of EXPO 2017 was held.

Clearly, its rich past and the recent development of architecture must have triggered a positive flywheel of creativity even in less international contexts.

No, non ci siamo dimenticati nulla nel titolo: Ultima, infatti, è il nome di un modello di zanzariera a pannello fisso di Genius and Blinds, utilizzata per un’innovativa installazione effettuata nei pressi di Kapchagay, una località sul Fiume Ili vicina ad Almaty, in Kazakistan.

Una richiesta insolita

All'inizio del 2019 la Company Domus Almaty, rappresentante kazaka di Genius and Blinds, riceve da un cliente locale un ordine di 450 zanzariere a pannello fisso di circa 50 cm di lato: una richiesta piuttosto bizzarra, dato che i pannelli fissi sono considerati un prodotto a bassa tecnologia montati in contesti dove il design e le prestazioni non sono determinanti. E, soprattutto, 450 pezzi tutti uguali… be’, ci sembrava un po’ esagerato!

Un’installazione creativa e resistente

Quest’ordine bizzarro, però, non era un equivoco! I 450 pannelli Ultima sono, infatti, stati applicati alle pareti di un lussuoso capanno di pesca, al posto delle vetrate.

Ma perché proprio le zanzariere a pannello?

Il "capanno" si trova in un'area climatica particolare: la temperatura oscilla tra i -40°C in inverno, rendendo inaccessibile l'area, ai +40°C in estate. Questa escursione termica ha fatto in modo che i meccanismi di avvolgimento e scorrimento delle zanzariere precedentemente montate si siano irrimediabilmente danneggiati (durante l'estate 2018 le reti si sono addirittura sciolte!).

L'architetto Tskhay Oleg Yenovich, incaricato della ristrutturazione ha, quindi, optato per una soluzione tanto semplice quanto affidabile: la ripetizione del modulo su tutte le facciate della costruzione, utilizzando un prodotto senza parti deteriorabili né motori che si possano guastare. I profili Ultima con reti in alluminio o in fibra di vetro, permettono, infatti, di affrontare ambienti con condizioni climatiche ed escursioni termiche estreme, senza riportare danni.

Una zanzariera a porta battente come ingresso

Il passaggio tra l'interno e l'esterno è garantito da una semplice, zanzariera a porta a battente Araknis, sempre della gamma Genius and Blinds, dotata di barra di rinforzo intermedia e fascia inferiore per l'apertura col piede. Grazie all’assenza di parti in movimento, molle o contrappesi (tranne i cardini di sospensione), la porta Araknis, al pari dei pannelli Ultima, si presta egregiamente all'utilizzo in condizioni climatiche e ambientali estreme.

Il risultato della ristrutturazione è visibile nelle immagini di questa pagina, a dimostrazione di come una eccellente gestione di competenza e creatività possano esprimere tutte le potenzialità di un prodotto semplice, ottenendone prestazioni estetiche e funzionali del tutto paragonabili a modelli ben più sofisticati.

Il Kazakistan come nuovo bacino della creatività

Il Kazakistan ci ha piacevolmente stupito: dal 1991, questa nazione ha compiuto ingenti sforzi di modernizzazione, che si possono cogliere dall'architettura all'avanguardia dei centri delle città più grandi come Almaty o la capitale Nur-Sultan (l'ex Astana) dove, lo ricordiamo, si è tenuta l'edizione di EXPO 2017.

Evidentemente il suo ricco passato e il recente sviluppo dell'architettura devono avere innescato un positivo volano di creatività anche in ambiti meno internazionali.

Citronella

This plant, also known as lemongrass, has now become the main ingredient in sprays, candles and natural repellents. But do you know that, when grown in sunny places, it can reach up to 2 meters in height? If you don't appreciate the scent, know that its extract has a much more powerful odor than the plant and leaves, which instead are very used to enrich the recipes of Asian cuisine. Lavender

Lavanda

Rosmarino

Aglio

Eh, no! L’aglio non è solo contro i vampiri! Le piante d’aglio, in particolare l’Allium giganteum, i cui cui steli possono raggiungere i 6 metri di altezza, sono considerati un insetticida naturale, anche per gli insetti che attaccano le piante. Sbocciano in grandi, bellissimi fiori viola a forma di palla, ma… senza l’odore pungente dei bulbi, per fortuna!
