Jennifer Doudna – born on this day (19th February)– shared the 2020 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with Emmanuelle Charpentier for developing a genetic engineering technique called CRISPR-Cas9. Based on a naturally occurring defence system used by bacteria to expunge foreign DNA from their genome, CRISPR-Cas9 has revolutionised both biomedical and plant research readily revealing the impact of editing genes in living cells and model organisms, and is being applied in human genome editing to correct disease-causing gene faults and deliver gene therapies

Ubermensch: The Biology
Friedrich Nietzsche said that the Ubermensch will be the special kind of race that will surpass the existing human race. From a biological perspective, how will the Ubermensch arrive on Earth, that is to say, will they come from natural evolution of humans or from artificial acceleration of humans. Scientists today have uncovered lots of data about human genomes and DNA that allow them to play God with living beings. We have rogue self-testers injecting themselves in the pursuit of advancing the human body through genetic engineering. We undoubtedly have the resources to advance evolution to our standards, but should we? Should we, as humans, make the decisions of nature and create our reality like it were a sandbox game? Many would argue that human engineering or genome editing shouldn't be allowed whatsoever because playing God is off the table, we have no right selecting an outcome that was previously left to natural chance. Simply put, we shouldn't do it because it isn't natural. However, natural is not synonymous with good or better. Cancer is natural, as is smoke, poison, and genetic diseases. We do our best to eliminate the naturally "bad" things in nature with modern science and medicine. So if we can prevent the occurence of naturally inherited diseases, why shouldn't we? Should we not aid the patients suffering from cancer or Tay-Sachs disease just because we have labeled genome editing as taboo? Regardless of your upbringing, the our considered moral judgment tells us to help others by increasing pleasures and decreasing pains, so then why debate over the notions of helping people through genome editing? We humans have the rare ability to advance our evolution to a point where genetic diseases or hereditary sicknesses can become relics of the past. We can biologically create the next Ubermensch, so what is stopping us? Thanks for reading.
