Gunning for peace

Sometimes we take a few things for granted. Like for example, our freedom. Or the security of our neighborhood. Without giving it much thought. Ask a freedom fighter what it was like to keep up the resistance that eventually made the foreign dominance yield to our demands, and you will start seeing the reel of events through his eyes. And salute the heroes that chanced their arms for the glory of the land. After all, who can value freedom more than those who have fought for it? And who can understand the value of peace better than those who have witnessed friends, colleagues and relatives bite the dust at the altar of war?

These fearsome and fearless leaders have braved all odds in their bid to take down the enemy, and have silently mourned the loss of human life to the lethal onslaught of the foe. While the ocean of bad blood, which washed the shores of both countries, bubbled to a boil. These two countries that were once branches of the same tree.

After reaching at crossroads in their careers, these diehard heroes opted to go benign. And rested their smoking rifles on the racks. Never to pull the trigger again. Understanding that war costs both countries more than an arm and a leg, they are today ready to give their right arm to establish peace, disengagement and rapprochement. Holding the belief that glory lies only in congruence and the fostering of goodwill.

Meet Maj Gen T K Kaul (PVSM, AVSM, VSM), one of the most decorated officers of the Indian armed forces. And the current Executive President of the IPSI India (India Pakistan Soldiers Initiative for Peace), where he exemplifies his National Defense College credo of ‘Wisdom is Strength’. For it is wisdom that helps us understand the vanity of engaging in war under a tsunami of rage. And it is wisdom that makes us realize the prudence of burying the hatchet and showing magnanimity. Maj Gen T K Kaul’s peace calling was evinced through his tireless and humongous contribution to the IPSI.

Maj Gen T K Kaul was the Brigade Commander of Jammu area in 1997 at a time when the state was plagued with militancy. He also served as the GOC of Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa before retiring from the armed forces.

Maj Gen TK Kaul: Enviable Accomplishments

Maj Gen TK Kaul had the rare distinction of being the sole interface between the Army, MOD and MEA, and holding the prestigious quasi diplomatic appointment of the DDG (Foreign Division), which gave him golden opportunities to interact with officials at the highest levels, both in India & overseas. He has been a lead member of various negotiating delegations within India and countries like USA and China.

Maj Gen TK Kaul has delivered talks at various forums, in India & other countries on topics ranging from HR, Intelligence & Security, Disaster Management, the Kashmir Affairs imbroglio, to Home Land Security, and the safe Cities concept. He was invited to address the Nigerian Parliamentary Committee on Defense concerning the PPP model in the defense production in Nigeria.

Maj Gen TK Kaul has been instrumental in the design of the security of various prestigious projects in India including the sacred shrine at Shirdi in Maharashtra, which receives the highest footfall of devotees. His consultation has been sought after for many years by numerous corporate and government bodies, including the prestigious IPL & other Cricket tournaments for evolving Security Training and Risk & Security Analysis.

The thesis on Psychological Warfare developed by Maj Gen TK Kaul, which details the use of propaganda, has been widely accepted and published in the National Defense College publication, and shared among the Commonwealth countries (USA, Europe, Africa and Far East).

What’s more, Maj Gen TK Kaul conceived & organized mega training and professional & cultural events at the state, national & international level, including “Know Your Army” mega exhibitions in various cities. The Indian Army has now charted this in its calendar as an annual key event, scheduled to be held at various places.

Maj Gen TK Kaul has also been credited for upgrading the existing assets and infrastructure within Maharashtra and Gujarat, and evolving strategies for a robust Disaster Management action plan for the whole of Maharashtra, especially in Mumbai.

As Head - Foreign Division Military Intelligence, Maj Gen TK Kaul acted as a key interface between the Army, MOD, MOH and MEA. He undertook the responsibility of coordinating the working of the Indian military attaches and missions deployed in India and across the world. This involved formulating, coordinating and handling visits of VVIP delegations to India & ex India. The job involved analyzing inputs related to political, economic and military affairs received from Indian military attaches and missions across the world.

With immense experience in high altitude terrains like the Kumaon Regiment, Maj Gen TK Kaul was also a key member of the faculty responsible for imparting training to officers of the Indian and foreign armies on matters related to Intelligence & Security Management. It encompassed studies on Geo Political & Economic Environment, Security Appreciation and Risk Analysis.
