1986: Christmas was good, if not stressful, this year. We invited Lisa over since she’s still coping from her recent divorce, plus the kids’ cousins. My parents are always so happy this time of year. They recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. I got greeting cards from Karen, Josie, Tony, and their partners as well; even Aunt Helen and my cousins sent a holiday card. Celebrating with family and seeing how happy the children get makes everything worth it.

1970: I told Mom and Dad that I like girls romantically today. I was so scared they would not be understanding. They seemed confused and alarmed at first but reassured their love for me. Dad told me something that surprised me. He found my Great-Aunt Clara’s diary from 1911 and discovered that Clara had a relationship with her friend Victoria when she was my age. Dad showed me a photo and romantic letter from Clara to her “close friend”. She died before I was born but I wish I could speak to her! Please come home from Vietnam soon! This war is dragging on and can’t end soon enough! Everyone misses you, especially Neal.

Helen’s Diary
1953: It was the happiest day of my life by far as I married my childhood friend and longtime sweetheart Aaron Levy at the local synagogue. All of my loved ones and extended family were in attendance. I wasn’t sure if they’d want to come but I’m glad they did. Since Papa died when I was 19, my brother George walked me down the aisle. I admit, our wedding was pretty rushed after I returned from my time as a volunteer nurse in Korea. It didn’t take too long to plan, but it was worth it! I just couldn’t wait to marry Aaron!

Dear Joe,
1978: I know it sounds silly of me to be writing a letter to my brother who died over 30 years ago, but it never gets easier, especially on Memorial Day, and I wanted to talk to you again. I took Francesca and the kids to visit the Lombardo plot at the cemetery today to honor and remember our deceased relatives, especially you and Grandpa Giuseppe. It’s sad I never knew Giuseppe and that my children never got to meet you. I tell them war stories about fighting the Nazis but it brings back painful memories and my survivor’s guilt. But maybe this is just part of war— it changes people and leaves so many wounded, even as I’m nearing 60. I’ll always love and miss you, little brother.
