Around 458 CE King Vakhtang of Kartli (Eastern Georgia), often known also as the Iberian Kingdom of Eastern Georgia, was hunting with his falcon in uncharted woods. The falcon caught a pheasant near a hot spring (a tpili, in Georgian), which prompted the King to order the building of a new city in such warm area of the Caucasus. It would be called Tbilisi, the warm spot, and later the capital of the unified kingdoms of Eastern and Western Georgia. Tsarist Russia annexed the kingdom in 1801, the Georgian aristocracy moved to Saint Petersburg, a city they found much to their liking.
