“Elisée answered to this double current, humanitarian and scientific. He contrived to interest the French in the great slavery abolition struggle which then began in America. Thanks for your work, i read you everyday. Does the Green Blood has any similarity to the river Nile? We know by the text that it has flood seasons like the Nile. How long in extension it is comparable to the true life river, being Westeros so large? Is not the case that Dorne should have a bigger output of cereal crops because of their river?

Floodplains formed a vital part of pre-modern agricultural ecosystems, because the material deposited by the annual floods enrich the soil and help maintain soil health and chemistry. So where the terrain is right for floodplains along the Greenblood would be considered vital territory for any Dornish lord to maintain and protect, but if the lands aren’t flat enough, the plains won’t stretch very far. Typically, floodplains form in braided rivers, rivers that branch into many channels as you see in places like the Nile Delta, or with curling rivers that form oxbow lakes. While the Greenblood is said to be slow and shallow, the map doesn’t show it meandering too much, I don’t think floodplains along the Greenblood would be very large.

Anyway, just eyeballing the Westeros map, the Greenblood doesn’t appear to be much longer than twice the Wall, but given that the river has a course as opposed to the straight line of the Wall and the fact that it has two branches, we can be generous with rounding and say three times or even a tad longer. Even so, the Wall is only 300 miles long, which makes the Greenblood at most somewhere around 900-1000 miles long, not even a quarter of the Nile’s length. Makes sense, of course, Westeros is a long continent, but not a very wide one.

Fiore Geographical Headcanons

So, how does Fiore work geographically? There are many factors to consider, including in-game canon, fictional lore and culture, and the way pokemon regions are based in real-life locations such as islands of Japan, France, Hawaii, Spain, etc.

Because the pokemon ranger games are so different from the mainline base games, I've been operating under a headcanon that Fiore, Almia and Oblivia are relatively close to one another, and far from other regions. It would be very convenient if they were all islands (especially given the volcanic activity) but Fiore and Almia are both peninsulas.

According to these maps, Almia is at the tip of Sinnoh, and Fiore almost overlaps completely with Johto.

There's also this fan-made map, though I am unsure of their logic/sources.

I like this one for putting Fiore, Almia and Oblivia relatively close to one another. This works for Fiore, but, admittedly, less well for Almia. Because whereas Fiore is described in the games as far from mainline regions like Johto and Kanto, Almia is more consistently tied as being close to Sinnoh. Fiore's own relation to Sinnoh his quiestionable. It is where the manaphy egg of the games gets sent- which is described as "somewhere far away" but is also potentially the closest place to send something.

Now, of course, the geography of the games doesn't map 1-to-1 with real-life locations. But I am curious to try to find a compromise for how Fiore works. If it's close to regions like Hoenn, why is it so different culturally, with no pokeballs or trainers? If Fiore and Almia are far from one another, why are they so culturally similar?

The compromise

The solution, for me, comes in the form of the high mountains toward the north of Fiore. My headcanon is as follows:

Fiore, Almia and Oblivia are all areas of high volcanic activity. On a geological timescale, the land of Fiore was a floating contintent that collided with the "main" continent containing Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn. Similarly to how the Indian subcontinent collided and fused with Asia, and likewise creating a massive mountain range.

The Sekra mountains? Functionally impassible for hundreds/thousands of years. Technically, the land on the other side of the mountain range eventually leads to Johto. But for most of the history of human habitation in the area, the regions were unable to have travel and cultural exchange. "Why don't people just tunnel from Fiore to Johto?" is a question on the same scale of "Why isn't there a land bridge between Italy and Sicily?". It seems like it should be possible, the two are so close together, but even with the use of pokemon and technology, the effort to build an actual route is geologically more complicated, expensive and impractical. Even in the modern day, it's easier to travel to other regions by ferry than to try to cross the mountains.

As a result, for most of it's history, Fiore's society developed without heavy influence from "neighboring" Johto. Technologies such as pokeballs didn't spread there. Cultural contact was via the ocean- with the peninsula of Almia and the Oblivia islands.
