A Century of Herstory: Lili Elbe
Lili Elbe was a transgender Danish artist who was one of the first recipients of sex reassignment surgery.
Born Einar Magnus Andreas Wegener in 1882, Elbe became known as a successful painter who began dressing and presenting as a woman after asking to substitute for an absentee model. After discovering how comfortable she found the attire she began to dress regularly as a woman for events and festivities and started identifying herself as a woman. At these functions her then wife and fellow artist Gerda Gottlieb would introduce her as her own sister and it was not until she transitioned that anyone knew who she really was. In 1912, the couple moved to Paris where Lili began publicly identifying as a woman and changing her name from Einar to Lili.
In the 1920s, Elbe sought to permanently change her body from that of a man to a woman through Sex Reassignment Surgery at the German Institute of Sexual Science founded and run by Dr. Magnus Hirschfeld who coined the terms “transsexualism”. The surgeries provided curiosities as during a transplantation of human ovarian tissue, it is postulated that Elbe was in fact born intersex due to supposedly already having rudimentary ovaries in her abdomen.
After Elbe underwent four surgeries which changed her reproductive system from that of a man to that of a woman, she was permitted to change her name and sex for all manner of legal documentation and be formally known as Lili Elbe.
After her marriage to Gottlieb was annulled, Elbe started a relationship with French art dealer Claude Lejeune with whom she wanted children with. In 1931 she underwent another surgery this time for a uterus transplant, however due to her body rejecting the uterus, Elbe developed an infection and died that September.

gerda gottlieb i love you
Gerda Gottlieb
Lili Elbe (1882-1931), una delle prime persone a subire interventi di riassegnazione sessuale [bella storia, peccato per i dialoghi nel film The Danish Girl, purtroppo poveri di psicologia].
- Tell me about... Lili. Where does she come from? - Inside me.
To love someone is to fall in love with their soul
Okay, I need to say this because on here is where people genuinely understand what I’m talking about • I just read this bio of Lili Elbe and it talked about Gerda also. I genuinely admire these two amazing women. They were so original and ahead of their time, you could say. Their relationship while they were married was fantastic and seemed like they totally appreciated each other. While Lili was going through her transition Gerda was beside her, I’m sure not fully understanding at first but when you love someone, you’re there for and with them. Even while Lili had her procedure Gerda was there giving Lili exactly what she needed, support and love. Maybe I’m totally emotional and in love with love, but their love story is so much more. They genuinely respected and loved each others soul and that’s the best kind of love there is. I hope I can be as lucky as them to love someone's soul with all of my soul. I’m gonna’ go back to crying now because of these amazing women and their amazing story.
