I’m in Miami, Florida for work, and stopped at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables.  I was here almost a year ago when I was also in town for work (and I had the Gösser Dark Beerand Köstritzer Schwarzbier).  They have a long list of Austrian and German beers, and Steve (my coworker, seen here) was getting his Spanish lesson via Facetime on his phone.  I was looking for a big one, since I had some time to kill, so I ordered a this and worked on getting some of the reviews for this blog updated on my phone.

Location: Draft at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables, FL

Numbers: 5% ABV

Appearance & Aroma: The extremely large glass mug showed a very clear, pale yellow brew with a thin, creamy head which disappeared fairly quickly.  There was a cracker-like aroma with a hint of graininess.

Taste & Feel: The body was very light, almost watery, but it made it very drinkable.  There seemed to be a decent amount of carbonation in it, giving a little bit of a tingle up front with a mostly cracker and bready flavor in the middle.  There was a lightly bitter at finish, leaving a cracker and bitterness in aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This beer worked out very nicely after I finished off the 2-for-1 Wiener Schnitzel and German potato salad.  It was light enough that it would go with almost anything, but it certainly worked out well to wash down a big, thick meal.  With the cracker and bready flavors, it might also go pretty well with a light pasta dish like shrimp scampi.

  My work travels have taken me from the Washington DC area to Miami, Florida this week.  It was almost a year ago that I was in Miami for the same project for work.  My coworker suggested a place to eat in Coral Gables, and we discovered it had closed, I suggested we try the Fritz & Franz Bierhaus, where we had dinner last year (and I had the Gösser Dark Beer and Köstritzer Schwarzbier).  The list of Austrian and German beers is great, but after I chose a few that weren’t available, I went with this one, since it was a nice warm day.

Location: Bottle at Fritz & Franz Bierhaus in Coral Gables, FL

Numbers: 4.9% ABV

Appearance & Aroma: It was perfectly clear and light golden colored.  There was a very thin head on it, which fell quickly and almost disappeared as I drank it.  There was a nice grainy and bready aroma I’ve found very common in German beers.

Taste & Feel: The body was very light with a very crisp mouthfeel.  There was a bit of a bready-grainy flavor in the middle with a hint of a toasty breadiness.  The finish was clean, with an almost cracker-like crispness that was slightly dry.

Food Pairing: This went perfectly with my Wiener Schnitzel and German potato salad.  The crispness and light body helped to wash down a fairly heavy meal, and the grainy and bready flavors went well with the breaded schnitzel.
