Caparison
I learned a new word thanks to a chapter on riding habits. (Specifically, "everything masculine carefully avoided; and the same taste that has thrown aside the gilded tinsel, and glittering caparison of the palfrey, should banish all assemblage of gaudy colours from the dress of the fair rider." >:( Sorry Clarke but I think they're pretty.)
I have absolutely no idea what the Manesse Codex is, but all the horses have caparisons or horse-trappers, and I think the designs are pretty.
