QUARTZ--Uber is on the front line of women’s rights in Saudi Arabia
BY GHADA ALSHARIF (FGJ ‘17) - Six years ago, a shaky video posted to YouTube showed 37-year-old women’s rights activist Manal Al-Sharif, wearing an abaya, navigating the streets of Kohber in Saudi Arabia. Speaking into the camera, she says in Arabic: “You’ll find a woman who has a phD, [or] a professor in a university… and she doesn’t know how to drive. We want change in the country.” It was a powerful protest message, one that ultimately landed Al-Sharif in jail. Not for her words, but because she said them from behind the wheel of a car.
