it had been a loud, very eventful evening that ended in the most perfect way:
silence.
you’d had a wonderful Christmas Eve filled with laughs with family members as the kids ran wild around their grandparents’ house with their cousins. the sound of joy echoed through the walls and your heart and lingered the very moment you drove home.
the snow lightly falls outside of the window, slowly littering the lawn with white as the low temperature of winter scratches just outside your home. the fire matty had started protects most of the cold feeling from you, its warm and relaxing tone filling the house.
it was like out of a movie; the four of you set out santa’s milk and cookies, chattering about the next day’s adventures, you and matty tucking the kids into bed with the tale of Christmas as the twins eagerly awaited santa to deliver their presents, you and your husband hoping they would fall asleep swiftly.
now, you both were putting together last minute to-dos for tomorrow morning: filling stocking stuffers, charging batteries for the video camera, and of course matty sinking his teeth into the baked cookies made for santa by his beloved family.
matty sings along to the classic christmas tune playing from his vinyl as he finishes steven’s first bike — something that took him an hour to put together as you tidied up the mantel. he thought of his son’s bright smile -a trait he clearly inherited from his mother- an encouraging factor as he finished up the last bit of instructions.
you turn the corner admiring the finished project, eyes landing on its vibrant colors, hearing Matty’s tools clank into an adjacent drawer.
“great job, saint nick.”
a grin forms on your husband’s face as his arm snakes comfortably around your waist, “thank you gorgeous. reckon he’ll like it?”
“he’s gonna love it.”
his lips meet yours, warm and gentle, the sensation calming your already relaxed body. they drag down your neck, leaving goosebumps in their wake as your eyes close at the feeling.
“i have a surprise for you,” he mumbles against your skin.
a content hum leaves you as he disappears. his voice leads from the other room, “wanted to give it to you when the kids were asleep.”
you cock an eyebrow as matty returns, nudging you towards the couch, gift in hand.
“not like that, naughty girl.”
beneath a layer of cartoon snowflakes and candy canes there your gift lays — a leather book, filled with pages and pages of notes, some rustled, crinkled, and stuck together. the pages are filled from top to bottom, with dates and times of the year. some of the ink is smudged with hurried entries, and you flip through the pages.
“it’s a booklet of stuff that happened this year. with the family.” he explains.
you blink at the gesture; he’s written everything from first visits to the doctor to zoo visits and other mundane updates throughout the year. you read over a few:
13 of march
- steven ate dirt playing outside, y/n almost had a heart attack
- my wife fell asleep in my lap
- y/n told me that i was ‘the father of the year’ for getting lila to take a bath
9 of july
- y/n finished that work project
- lila got mad because I didn’t ‘peel her cheese stick right’
- kids went to bed without a fuss
22 of november
- y/n came to visit me in the studio
- finished reading that book to lila and steven, spoiler: they didn’t like the ending
- i made dinner (nothing burnt thankfully)
matty knew it’d been a hectic year for you both, with the kids starting primary school and him finishing up with tour. almost every night when you were asleep or on mum duty, he’d write the day’s events down and think of your reaction when he’d finally give it to you.
you’d forgotten that most of those things happened; what seemed like small insignificant moments were ones that made his day.
a smile tugs at your lips, “Matty, this is-“
the paper moves between your fingers again, and you’re in awe of how much writing there is. he must’ve written thousands of words and moments throughout the year, at a minimum.
“it’s perfect.”
he chuckles lowly, “merry christmas, my love.”
his heartbeat pounds softly near your ear, being engulfed by his scent as matty gently plays with your hair, the other holding your waist.
his grip loosens reluctantly as you stand, “wait let me get yours, hold on.”
he waits patiently on the couch, hearing you rummage through a few drawers and cupboards, ending with a few items clattering on the ground. the kids probably think that’s santa, he thinks to himself.
“sorry baby, didn’t have a lot of time to wrap it properly,” you ramble. “tried my best though.”
his eyes glimmer up at you, “I already know it’s perfect.”
you give him a soft smile as he tears open the card, reading aloud.
“merry Christmas matty, I love you and hope you enjoy this as much as you enjoy being onstage?” his voice turns curious, another note slipping past his fingers and landing on his lap.
it was a magazine ad for a new guitar he’s been wanting for years along with another envelope full of cash. you know he’s been eyeing it for ages, but he always had an excuse for not buying it: ‘we can’t afford it right now, I’ll get it another time’, ‘I’ll use my other guitar until it breaks’.
this time you wanted to ensure he didn’t have an excuse not to buy it.
his eyes meet yours, tender and dancing with disbelief. it’s like he’s fallen in love with you all over again.
“darling,” he breathes. his face pulls into a happy smile, and you feel the warmth of his lips on yours as he gazes at you.
“wasn’t sure what color you wanted it in, so I just saved some cash.”
“i love it. thank you, y/n.”
“merry christmas matty.”
he pulls you close, placing a kiss on your temple, a quiet and endearing ambience filling your home.
i don’t think i’ve posted my satvb posters so i wanted to share them!
i’m gonna try to digitalize them at some point to make them more professional but i cannot get the hang of procreate for the life of me
i got really committed to recreating them bc they were sold out of the poster for my show by the time i got to the front of the merch line so i just had to make it myself. but then i had to make all my other favorites. and then i had to make my own
