Uncle Charlie came by once every few weeks after his first initial visit. Said that he was “just checkin’ up on his niece is all”.
Hana knew better. Part of that was definitely true but Hana’s noticed the stares. The other men in suits that are just casually strolling through Lestallum.
She was a target. And she didn't know if that was a good or bad thing.
One day, Charlie came by completely exhausted in his tan suit with his briefcase. Almost just collapsed on her couch. Extremely worn out and that was the first night that he stayed over.
It was also the night Hana did some snooping around. Astrals be damned that Uncle Charlie keep her from the truth now too.
Hana always knew. There was always something that Dino never wanted to tell her more about or elaborate on.
Dino had always dodged her questions when she would ask about his name. Or how he got a much more detailed scoop than all the other reporters.
“Just comes with the name, Doll. Your pal Dino IS well known around here.” He would say with a nervous chuckle and nothing more.
Often times Hana would try and push further. Using the same exact skills that Dino himself had taught her.
It was then that he'd take on a more serious tone. One where the not-so-friendly chills would creep up on her arms. All while he would be staring right at her with a look that she still couldn't describe to this day.
He would then drop the subject completely with a lighthearted "capisce". That was when Hana knew not to poke any further and that she might've crossed too far into boundaries that even Dino himself might have been unsure of.
Hana respected it though. It wasn't common sense that his family life was a touchy subject. Always had been.
So Hana went snooping around Uncle Charlie’s things.
And it seemed his name and the ties it had were apart of that iffy territory as well.
There was many papers in the briefcase. A LOT of possibly illegal documents and plans and a whole lot of other papers talking about business affairs.
And in a weird way Hana was relieved. She was right about the shady business.
But like woah.
She didn't know the name ‘Ghiranze' carried this much weight.
Uncle Charlie woke that morning seeing everything organized and little sticky notes on almost every document.
Notes Hana wrote herself viewing everything from a business standpoint. Helpful tips that she sometimes remembered Dino telling her about while he worked on a new scoop.
Uncle Charlie's eyes go wide as he watched Hana sitting on the couch reading through one of their more important deals with a very close business partner.
“Oh, this is all just absolute bullshit.” Hana promptly said before she ripped the whole contract up.
“Woah, woah, woah!” Charlie came almost running frantically over to her. Caught between wanting to stare at her like a fish out of water or glare at her for going through things she clearly was not supposed to go through.
It was then that Charlie noticed the familiar grey jacket that Hana was wearing. There were a few moments of silence. Both of them just staring at each other.
Then Uncle Charlie burst out laughing. The whole knee slapping kind of throaty laughter.
“You really resemble him a lot like that, Doll. Now come tell ol’ Uncle Charlie why you did that. Let me understand that thought process.”
From then on Charlie came by more often with other business proposals that he was unsure of. Only if Hana promised not to “shred them to bits” like last time.
If Dino were alive, Charlie knew he would be getting a stern talking to. From his own nephew. Ha!
They worked like that for a while. Hana helping out from the shadows.
Charlie was often concerned for her. As Dino was like his own son, he saw Hana like his own daughter.
And again. He knew that once Dino found out what Hana was doing (Charlie was a firm believer that Dino was still alive) that Uncle Charlie would likely get his head bitten off. Metaphorically of course.....maybe.
But sometimes, lookin’ at her sitting on her damn comfy couch, he could have sworn he was looking at his own nephew. And that brought tears to his eyes.
