“pretty sure you don’t trust anyone.” not so much an observation as an assumption. you’ve found that she doesn’t really seem to like you much, but you consider yourself a pretty cool person so clearly its just that she doesn’t like people much, it can’t be that it’s you she doesn’t like. “if it makes you feel better i don’t really trust ‘em either.” not a very encouraging thing to say when you’re taking her to people you’ve told her are your friends, but even when they’re your friends you don’t really trust them. the people you befriend have certain talents, and you really don’t want to be on their bad side. “trust is overrated.”

                       NAUGHT  BUT  A  THRESHOLD   separates friends.     if the other’s home ,  that is.     coasting on a whim ,  he’s arrived  ---  having been in town to play a secret show  &   in desperate need of company.     even still ,  knuckles hover just away from forrest’s front door.     ( he should’ve called & he knows it. )     it’s been too long since they last saw each other ,  holding hands ,  sitting cross - legged on the floor trying to talk to what they  thought  was carmine.     the idea of turning around  &  pretending this little excursion never happened crossed his mind ,  but the singer persisted.

Bloody Mary’s existence comprised of constant wandering through people’s mirrors, aimless and unnoticed, invisible unless they summoned her. But she can always see them from the Other Side of the Mirror, and from time to time she would come across an interesting person and stay in there, observing them for a few days. It was never long before she grew restless and left, or was summoned somewhere else in the world.

Usually she found these people by accident, simply by peering from enough mirrors--- but today felt different. Mary had felt a certain pull toward that specific mirror, and as soon as she looked through it she had a guess as to why: someone in that house attracted ghosts. She could easily sense the paranormal energy in the room and highly doubted she was the only spirit to ever be present.

There was a young boy living in the house, in his teens. Bloody Mary had the impression he was kind of anxious. Her gaze followed him until something very rare happened, catching her off guard and drawing a gasp from ghostly lips: the boy looked over his shoulder, as if sensing her eyes on him, and she could’ve sworn she saw his eyes widening in surprise...or maybe fear. She felt the rush of blood trickling down her cheeks (if she had a heartbeat it would be quickening) and projected her voice, desperately trying to make contact. “You can see me?” Her mouth gaped and her tone was full of disbelief and hope.

you know nova well, even if the two of you had never been the best of friends. there was a time that you were both in the same social circles, both considered the popular kids, but she’d drifted away from that. it wasn’t really your intention to stop talking to her as much, it was more just that you never tended to run into each other. you still said hi in the halls, still tried to be nice, but you didn’t go out of your way.

that’s what makes it so surprising when you open the door to see her. you’re so shocked that it’s her that you almost forget that there’s a storm, almost don’t notice the fact that she’s bleeding and clearly cold. it only takes a second to snap out of it, to back up and let her in. you were never exactly close, so the fact that she came here? something was definitely up.

“are-- are you okay? you’re bleeding.” asked gently, not wanting to set her off if something bad had happened. “do you want.. like.. dry clothes?”

“i’m fine, forrest.” certainly spoken with too much bite to be true. it’s more a defence, a refusal to admit otherwise. too many people had died, many of them right in front of you, and you were far from fine. drinking and drugs had become your release, but that’s not something sustainable; and frankly it’s not even that helpful. all it’s doing is slowly tearing you apart even more, but you’ve gotten so used to the pain that you haven’t even noticed the little ways it’s getting worse. “everyone drinks sometimes.” not as much as you, though, and they certainly don’t pair it with drugs. “you’re a kid, you wouldn’t get it.”
