Considering that Rafe has shown signs that he doesn't want to be the way that he is, that he has claimed that he becomes that way to make his father proud of him or to help his father, etc. Think back to the episode where they all think that Ward is dead and he apologizes to Sarah for what he did and telling her that he'll work on getting better.
