The empty shopping cart hurtled down the aisle faster than expected. It plowed straight through a display of stacked boxes of Cheerios, scattering them across the floor, and barely slowed. At last, its motion came to an abrupt stop when it rammed into a glass freezer door with a metallic crash.
A burst of laughter echoed from the other end of the aisle — Cassie, thrilled. She had been so focused on the success of her little trick that she’d missed the person standing nearby — who, even if she hadn’t seen Cassie shove the cart in the first place, couldn’t have missed the clamor and commotion altogether.
Now, Cassie noticed the woman. She slapped a hand over her mouth to stifle another laugh, though her grin still showed through her fingers. “Wow, uh,” a cleared throat, and she managed not to sound totally guilty. “That was kinda wild, huh?” Good thing she’d made herself look more human before slipping into the store. Maybe she could still get away with it.
