'i fuckin' earned that two dollars and fifty cents, alright - my fingers hurt for three weeks after that,' in spite of the jokes, he gives ben a close lipped and appreciative grin. 'seriously, thanks, man. but, um... i feel like i owe you guys. like, everything...' be serious, tozier. this is serious. 'if you ever need anything...' richie pats ben on the shoulder. 'your mom has my number, you can get it from her,' @ghoulsplay.

khione doesn't know. what she does know is that for all her power, and penny's, too, sky high is still a predominantly white institution. sky u, as well.

at what point are we good enough?

she, magenta, penny, ethan. they have to work twice, no thrice, as hard in order to get the recognition that other people like will and layla get. and that's not even speaking of the fact that will is a third-gen and therefore, a shoe-in for almost every superhero team after school (if he doesn't create his own first).

(as much as she loves them and she loves them dearly, it's true. they'll have an easier time. it's all optics. it is the way it is.)

at what point are we good enough?

it's pretty much a miracle that the vanguard is primarily made up of people of color, now that she's thinking about it.

"that depends, do you want the optimistic version---" which is that they may be good enough for some and, at the same time, not be good enough for the other regular folks out there on any given day, but that it doesn't matter because they're good enough for themselves. "---or the pessimistic version?" which is that they'll never be good enough, and all for something they're born with: the color of their skin.

vaguely, khione recalls something that penny said to magenta once: i’m here because me and my mother are both very convincing people, and because principal powers likes me. deal with it. the cryokinetic knows a thing or two about having an overbearing mother. so she can't exactly fault the duplicator in question for rolling with the punches. for going with it when someone pulls some strings.

(her own family name has opened certain doors, too.)

most of the time, valentine's day is just a day like any other. to khione, at least, whose plans consist, mostly, of hoarding all of the sweets - whether it's white chocolate or red velvet cupcakes whenever the day rolls around.

(khione has never needed flowers or elaborate dates. not really.)

and then the whole maxwellness thing happened.

which, to be fair, put a damper on a lot of things. valentine's day included.

(it almost unmade her. worse, still, it almost unmade her friends. which is worse in her eyes.)

"i'm sorry," she says quietly, now cuddled up against him. "i doubt this is how you wanted to spend today." this is hardly how khione wanted to spend today. if only because she'd initially wanted to go see the heart eyes movie with him (to celebrate getting discharged from the hospital, if nothing else) until her body decided that mutiny was the only option.

lifting their intertwined hands, she presses a soft kiss atop his. "i'm really glad you're here, though. i love you. and i'm not just saying that because you've got to suffer through my tv show choices right now."

khione swallows audibly before admitting, ever so softly (like they don't have the place to themselves right now): "i'm glad you came back - i was feeling... cold. without you. frost in my bones and everything."
