the thing about gibving is that the kind of sexual relationship that irving holds as the only permissible kind (heterosexual, christian marriage) is, given the context of the setting and his evangelical outlook, a deeply hierarchical one between a natural superior whose place is to rule and a natural inferior whose place is to submit. & also irving's cruel and vengeful treatment of his working class subordinates reveals a deeply held belief that they are his inferiors whose natural place is to serve him. & gibson is irving's personal servant and hates his position but will do whatever it takes to survive it

After the Rat Divorce Jirv and Gibson become confidants and then fall in love
i love the concept of irving hyperfixating on empathy for gibson because it's so much safer (in a way) to allow himself to acknowledge relating to gibson as opposed to hickey (even though they both represent different axis of irving's repression and vis a vis what he fears being, doing, allowing, etc) ... so then gibson begins confiding non-hickey related information (because he can't bring himself to perpetuate that lie so he changes the subject) and then in return irving begins to open up to him as well, including much that gibson at least is able to clock as Gayboy Repression Symptoms even if irving can't/doesn't, and then eventually... mutual understandings forming....... feelings perhaps?????
The Terror Ships Poll - Round 1, Match 10 - Gibving vs Hickeyirving
William Gibson/John Irving (Gibving)
Cornelius Hickey/John Irving (Hickeyirving)
they're both so embarrassed about billy's hr violation that they had to distract themselves with a different hr violation
i keep thinking about a gibsonirving modern au where irving accepts his sexual orientation enough to be in a public relationship with a man but still is bound by traditionalist christian values enough to be very invested in erring as close as possible to that kind of heterosexual ideal (because if it's not so different, maybe it's not wrong after all - maybe even his family/childhood pastor/etc will see how close he's come to what they want of him and accept it as good enough. and besides, how else is he supposed to measure his success as a man?) & billy, as a practical and beautiful young man who does not want to be a service worker for the rest of his life and is painfully aware of how few prospects he has (& unaware of his own naivety, and of what a man like that might do to someone in his position), decides that, although irving does not have the outlook or wit of a man he would like to love, he is upper middle class enough that it would be foolish to refuse his attention and, after about a year, decides it would be foolish to refuse his proposal and marries him. i just think things would get really miserable which is awesome
