Description

Gilbert Spencer RA (1892 – 1979) was a British painter of landscapes, portraits, figure compositions and mural decorations.

Between 1925–29 Gilbert Spencer lived more or less continuously with the Carline family at 47 Downshire Hill, Hampstead. (Stanley had married Hilda Carline in 1925). According to Richard Carline, he painted this ‘Self-Portrait’ in the ground floor living room which he occupied as a bedroom.

Although the artist has made many portraits, he has always preferred to paint himself, commenting that to do so was to avoid the feeling of nervousness, as well as the cost of a ‘sitter’.
