Wicked is its whole ass own book series
I would have such a better relationship with Wicked if people acknowledged that it was a FANFICTION and not CANON or indeed canon compliant and stopped basing their ice cold takes about the ACTUAL CANON on what they know of Wicked from the soundtrack + what they remember of a movie they last saw when they were eight
Contextually for this, I saw a post arguing that we only know the witches (specifically the witch of the east) were wicked because “Glinda” said so. Like first of all Glinda didn’t turn up till the last five minutes so go ahead and tick that “only saw the movie and think I get to say things about the lore” box. Second of all, the witches ENSLAVED THE WINKIES AND MUNCHKINS. That’s how we know they were wicked! Because they did wicked things like ENSLAVING ENTIRE POPULATIONS. Ding dong the person who enslaved our entire population is dead, let’s celebrate the person who FREED US.
Finally, Wicked isn’t canon compliant because the Witch of the West was already old, shriveled, and wicked before Oz even became a fairy country, which was WAAAAAAY before the Wizard ended up there. Iirc, there’s at least one variant of canon* that had her partially responsible for overthrowing the royal family, which one variant of canon also has the Wizard doing. There are NO variants of canon where the Wizard was established as the Wizard BEFORE the witches were established as Wicked. And I can LIVE WITH Wicked being all “well yeah but wouldn’t it be fun if”, but then people go “okay but if you look at Wicked-” I DON’T HAVE TO LOOK AT WICKED TO READ THE LORE OF THE OZ STORIES BECAUSE WICKED IS JUST A FANFICTION AND DOESN’T HAVE ANY INPUT INTO IT.
*Baum played fast and loose with canon so there are several iterations of Oz’s backstory, but none of them support Wicked as able to be inserted into canon at any point
