Denmark
As we emerged from the automatic glass doors outside Copenhagen airport we were greeted by a familiar prickle of 14 degree fresh Dainish air & cosy scents of cinnamon that seem to fill this quaint country from its many bakeries famous for their sweet delicacies. taking in a deep breath, I finally felt the tickle of butterflies in my stomach - this was the real beginning of my once in a lifetime adventure. Although the next 3 months will include its fair amount of frightened uncertainty from the extremely new & curious experiences to follow, The amazing technology of the 20th century means that my nearest & dearest are only a free wi-fi connection away. I chose to begin my journey in Denmark, a country I hold so close to my heart it's almost as if I have returned home in a sense, my mother lived here until her early 20's & has taken me on regular visits every few years or so since I was only 1 year old, for this i am eternally thankful as I believe this is what initially sparked my curiosity / obsession with travel & cultures around the world. Everything about this country entices me to return, the familiarity of the sounds & tones of the language, although I can only roughly speak it, listening gives me a sense of comfort as I try to mimic the words in my head - maybe one day. Today icy clouds form a thin layer across the sky & had this been anywhere else I would be disheartened by the dreary undertones of the weather but somehow it is irrelevant, I am here, on the otherside of the world, nothing could possibly go wrong even after a smatter of rain begins playfully falling from the mess of fluff & grey in the sky I cannot wipe the smile off my face. Historical cottages with thatched roofs are a common sight in Denmark, much more so than new sky rise apartments. It's the Danes commitment to history & tradition that makes this place truly fairytale-like. Such as the 'burning of the witch' a mid-summer tradition involving copious bonfires (aimed to scare bad spirits away) lining beaches & scattering fields throughout Denmark, I can imagine the arial view would be quite phenomenal. The effortlessly calm, beautiful country of Denmark amazes me through each of its seasons from its stunning display of flora & fauna throughout the summer months as the environment shows off its intense array of vibrant colors & life to the contrasting depths of winter with meters of delicate snow forming a blanket of frosty white powder for all to enjoy. Denmark truly is a fairytale land you have to see to believe. 28th May - 14th June
