“Thank you for agreeing to meet with me, Ukitake-taichou.” Here in Ugendō the air was peaceful. Outside the window, koi slipped in and out of sight beneath the deck, flashes of gold not unlike his own stock in the Kuchiki gardens. Byakuya could understand why he chose this place to rest, rather than the Thirteenth’s barracks.
The calm felt at odds with the tension inside him. A cup of tea sat waiting, still steaming but as of yet untouched. He allowed himself to appreciate its warmth, wrapping both hands around the porcelain, but could not bring himself to drink, not yet -- just as he couldn’t quite name the true cause of his visit.
“How is your health...?”
