Glasgow’s Charles Rennie Mackintosh history-shaping triumph

The decorative panels in the Music Room of the House for an Art Lover, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, are included in a new e-book published today (July 20) by VisitScotland, ‘25 objects that shaped Scotland’s history’.  

The narrow panels, described in the book as “almost heartbreakingly beautiful” rise almost ceiling height. Each one shows a simple, elegant design in the Art Nouveau style, suggesting the willowy shape of a woman with a flower at her throat.

Charles Rennie Mackintosh designed the House for an Art Lover for a competition run by a German magazine, collaborating with fellow student Margaret Macdonald, but missed the deadline to submit it. It was built long after his lifetime when a Glasgow businessman paid for its construction to the original plans in the city’s Bellahouston Park. The panels were created from the original portfolio of drawings by the artist. The House opened to the public in 1996.

Mackintosh (1868-1928) trained as an architect and studied art and design at the Glasgow School of Art.

There is a Mackintosh trail around Glasgow, which takes in a dozen or so buildings that are relevant to his life. He either designed them, created elements within them or had his life touched by them in another way. They include the Glasgow School of Art, The Lighthouse Centre for Architecture, and the Daily Record Building.

VisitScotland said the objects on the list “best represent Scotland’s rich and colourful history”.

One entrance to Grand Central Hotel in Glasgow is on Central Station itself, which must place it among the most convenient places to stay after a journey. And it is some spectacular railway journey, if you come up through the Lake District from the south. With so much soft wood and stone, and with daylight streaming in, it is a railway station concourse of character and distinction, which you couldn't possibly say of the station at the other end of the line – Euston. One passenger seems reluctant to pass it by.
