Album Review: Billy Idol "Dream Into It"

This actually marks the third time I've been lucky enough to review an album by Billy Idol: In 2021 I review his EP Roadside and in 2022 I reviewed his EP The Cage. While both EPs were kind of cool, I hoped they'd be a prelude to a full album since he hasn't release a full studio album since 2014. Now that's happening: Dark Horse Records (George Harrison’s record label that has been revitalized by Harrison’s son Dhani) is releasing Dream Into It this week. This weekend is also when the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will announce their 2025 Inductees and Idol is nominated for the very first time. The timing of this album is set to prove he either deserves to be inducted or that the Rock Hall dropped the ball again.

Returning for this album is guitarist Steve Stevens. The two of them made a great team in the 80s and it's cool to see them back together again after years apart. On bass on this album is Chris Chaney (Jane's Addiction, Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders, and currently with AC/DC). On drums there's Glen Sobel on a song and the rest of the album features Josh Freese (too many bands to name, but currently with Foo Fighters). There's plenty of guest singers joining Idol including Avril Lavigne, Alison Mosshart of The Dead Weather and Joan Jett. This Summer, Idol and Jett are co-headlining a tour together, so I'm betting they will both come out and sing "Wildside" together during one of their sets.

This album doesn't come close to Idol's golden age of Rebel Yell (arguably his best album), but it is a return to form for him. He's bringing his punk energy to radio-friendly rock with songs like "Still Dancing", proving he's still got it. The album's going to take more listens to see how it ranks with his discography, but with the musicians he has assembled like Chaney and Freese, he's still rocking at age 69!

5 years ago, on January 21, 2017, Johnny Depp attended, presented and performed on the 2017 NAMM TEC Awards, at the Anaheim Hilton, in Anaheim, California.

After presenting Joe Perry with the Les Paul Award for setting the highest standards of excellence in the creative application of audio technology, Johnny returned with his fellow Vampires (Alice Cooper, Robert DeLeo, Glen Sobel, Joe Perry and the special guest Brad Whitford) for a special jam-session with Hollywood Vampires’ to play “As Bad as I Am”, Aerosmith’s covers of “Sweet Emotion”, “Walk this Way” and “Combination” and Tiny Bradshaw cover of “The Train Kept A-Rollin'”

> Curiosity: Right after this performance, the Hollywood Vampires (as a full band) made a second longer performance now during the 2017 Imperial Ball, which happened on the same place, but in a different location. For those who wants to differ which photo belongs to which event, just pay attention to Johnny’s shirt. Johnny wore the same clothes in both events, but on the NAMM TEC Awards Johnny wore a sleeveless shirt under his waistcoat. On the Imperial Ball, Johnny had a black shirt with sleeves rolled up. Some other differences are the size of the stage, lighting and the other members that only joined on the second event (Tommy Henriksen, Bruce Witkin and Matt Sorum).
