How To Glitter Your Converse
I have this thing about my Converse where I wear them into the ground. I literally live in my pairs, wearing them till they have holes in them and the sole is starting to peel. So everyone in a while, they need a touch up. Sometimes I'll draw or paint on them but my favorite beautification is to glitter them to kingdom come. I love the way they catch the light and leave a trail of glitter everywhere I go.
Here's what you'll need to turn your old pair of Converse into a glittering disco ball.
An old pair of Converse- You can use new ones of course, but I love giving my old pairs a new life just before they fall apart. I'm using an oldish newish pair Converse high tops.
Fabric/Glitter Glue- You want glue that'll form an attachment between the fabric and the glitter. I am using Tulip's Fashion Glitter Glue
Glitter- The color is all up to you, but I recommend getting glitter that comes in a shake and a big size of it because you will be using/wasting a lot. Also try playing around with glitter sizes for a little extra touch. I'm using Recollections Fine Glitter in the color Bling.
Something to cover your workspace- this isn't really necessary but I do have to warn you that glitter gets on everything so sometimes it's just easier to throw away paper than trying to unstick static glitter. I'm using pattern paper but newspaper works well too. Oh and those cheap table covers from Dollar Tree!
Your Finger- You could use a brush, but eh. I use a finger because I don't mind getting all into my DIY's and because it works better for me.
Painters Tape- Unless you want your sole to be glittery as well, you'll need tape to protect the rest of the shoe.
Paint- This is optional. I pained the shoes at the beginning of this post because they had been white and were stained. I decided to paint the foam-ish platform part of my shoes because I didn't really like the rainbow look.
Step 1: The Set Up
Move everything out of the way and place down what you’ll be covering the table with. If you don’t, you might be eating glitter for a week. Once your workplace is ready, get everything you need close by. Using your painters tape, cover the soles of your shoes and take the laces out of your shoes.
Step 2: Time for Glue
Starting with one side of the shoe, squeeze glue on. My glue has a writers tip, so if you wanted to have glitter words, you could leave it as is, but I want a completely glittered shoe so using my finger, I spread the glue out. I once tried applying glue with a foam brush, but this way turned out better. It left a thicker amount of glue on the shoe and a better bond for the glitter.
Step 3: The Part Where Glitter Goes Everywhere
With the glue all spread out and ready, it’s time to go crazy with you glitter. Shake the glitter all over your shoe. Don’t be worried about wasting glitter. You want no inch of the shoe left unglittered.
Step 4: Wait
Once you’ve applied your glitter, leave the shoe where it is. My glue says to leave for 2 hours. This is the perfect time to work on the other shoe. Just one side though. Now, if you’re able to, I like to leave the shoes alone for the rest of the day. I’d rather the bond get stronger and work on the shoes for two days than risk messing up glue that hasn’t completely dried. Remember that because we just spread the glitter by hand, there is a lot more of it to dry.
Step 5: The Other Side
The next day, I check to see if the glue is dry. If it is, I pick up the shoe and gently tap off the extra glitter. Now, I don’t like to waste glitter, so now is the time, I move both shoes off and collect the extra glitter for the other side of the shoes. I set it aside and repeat step 2, 3, and 4.
Extra Options:
Step 6:
At this point, you could leave it as is but I never really liked the rainbow foam-ish platform part of my shoe. I wanted to go blue because it's my favorite color. I had the perfect color in a chalkboard paint and was too lazy to go buy normal acrylic paint so I just used that. I also decided to paint the front part of the shoe.
Step 7:
Once the paint has finished, I decided to throw on some black rhinestones that I had left over from one of my color theory projects.
And here is the final project. You’ve got sparkly converse and they’ll last you a long time. And probably have people bemused with your trail of glitter but what the hell, you're incandescent. You shoes are too.
