how to build a glocal startup
“glocal = global + local”
building a successful startup is not easy. actually, it is damn hard.
if i say it is an uphill battle, i wouldn’t be exaggerating it, especially when 90% of startups fail. and talking about building a glocal startup, it is an uphill battle in the rainy season.
however, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have any hope if you have a plan to launch your startup glocally. what you need to do is to consider certain things to ensure your success.
in today’s post, i’m going to discuss the top five strategies to build a successful glocal startup. after reading this post, i’m sure, you will have a clear picture of what you should do initially to make your business idea a reality.
without further ado, let’s dig deeper:
1. find out a glocal problem
this is the first step to establishing a glocal business. you should find out an existing glocal problem that doesn’t have any dependable solution at the present moment. the more serious the problem is, the more chances of your success are.
albert einstein said once,
“if i were given one hour to save the planet, i would spend 59 minutes defining the problem and one minute resolving it.”
my friend, dig deeper into the market to define the existing problem in the industry in which you want to start your business because you cannot create a great product unless you thoroughly understand the problem.
2. build a product to address this problem
after finding the glocal problem, the next step is to build a product to address this problem. one thing you should keep in the mind that you need to thoroughly analyze the problem before starting to work on the product. you should be knowing how serious the problem is, how often the problem occurs, etc.
once you understand the problem thoroughly, you can build a solution without any hassle. however, when you are building a solution to the glocal problem, you should never forget your target audience. the solution you build must be able to address all the pain points of your target audience.
3. understand revenue model
be it a local, global, or glocal startup, you must understand its revenue model. without doing so, your business will not survive. though you may feel like guessing about how you will make money when you are starting out, studying and analyzing more established global startups can give you a concrete idea of making money. and after gaining some real experience, you can begin your own revenue model.

Zen & the Art of Global Strategy Maintenance (1): Why is it important to rethink global strategy now?
By Ulf S. Baecker, Hamburg; Dear Lilly&Paul, this post is the first in a series of posts dealing with the transformation of global strategies in organisations. At first glance, that sounds probably "dry" and not so exciting to you, but I assure you, strategic thinking is not just limited to adults and it can be quite exciting, too! You two have already strategies using yourselves and - as I can only judge from distance - you seem to execute them quite effectively. So, to manage your daily life challenges better, it is quite usefull to rethink your existing strategies from time to time. And this is exactly, what I will do here with this series of blog entries and I invite you to accompany me on this journey from a black and white into a very colourful world.
My intention is to make it rather a "collage" of existing streams of thoughts from the global debate on how organisations should adopt to the changes around them in an increasingly globalising environment. This post incorporates also a few of my own unfinished ideas, f.ex. how to deal with conflicting strategic choices, from my time when I lived and worked in Tokyo back in the early 1990s.
I would not have started this series of posts without the inspiration by four individuals, which I want to give credit here and introduce them to you two:
Firstly, I'm grateful to current German Federal Minister of Defense, Baron Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg, who motivated me by his collage style towards theory & model development to lower my hesitation to build upon other's intellectual thoughts and this is meant in a constructive way. Secondly, I salute Dottoressa Antonella Mei-Pochtler, Senior Managing Director of the Boston Consulting Group & global authority in strategic thinking, whose thoughtful speech "The Art of AND", held a few days ago in Munich, Germany, at the annual key note event of the allMBA association. She inspired me to revisit my thinking from the earlier days of my carreer in Japan at the Strategic Planning Department of the Hitachi Group on the similarities and differences of strategy definition & execution between different cultures. Thirdly, I thank Drue Kataoka, an artist from San Francisco, for reinforcing my thirst to dive more into Asian philosophies, in particularly, the Zen Philosophy, after reading one of here excellent blog entries from which I lent also the picture attached here. Finally, I thank my academic father in the area of global strategy thining, Harvard turned IESE Profesor Pankaj Ghemawat, for providing the academic framework on what I would like to dubb the New Global Strategy School which promotes more than just one strategic choice for players acting in a global context.
Stop AND Go at the same time? In today's environment, this ambiguous mode very nicely represents the thinking needed to succeed in a globally connected world. Seen at an intersection in Silicon Valley, CA, USA (c) 2010 Drue Kataoka
I decided to develop the content of the "Zen & the Art of Global Strategy Maintenance" transparently in order to let you adding and reviewing it and to be faster in the publishing process. I will share my views on a mindset in organisations away from black & white to a more colourful world, answering to one question probably raised by @Lilly&Paul, two lovely kids at the age of 10 and 12, one at a time.
The old rational paradigm of sequential strategy setting based upon black and white thinking does not work anylonger, rightly said Dr. Antonella Mei-Pochtler recently. If Antonella & other authorities in the field of strategy will go on presenting their vision on the need for a new paradigm in strategy, it is foreseeable that leaders around the world will eventually start to rethink their strategies and look out for new paradigms. To this process, I intend to add value throught this series of blog posts under the headline of "Zen & the Art of Global Strategy Maintenance". I invite all of you to post your comments.
Lilly&Paul's Question No.1: Why is it important to rethink global strategy now?
1. The quest for a new paradigm of strategy is up now: as the old paradigm will be replaced soon it is important to initiate a global process in search of a new paradigm NOW which should lead to a colourful competition of best ideas from every corner of practical and academic thinking on the globe (the time argument)
2. Globalization concerns 99% of organisations: most organisations are concerned by the increasing global connectiveness and therefore it is important to them to have an effecitve strategy in place. Whether they are a large expanding multinational corporation or a Local Champ, whether they are for-profit or not-for-profit, they need to add the global dimension to their corporate strategy. (the relevance argument)
3. Tremenduous need for speed requires strategic excellency: the ability to fastly respond to ad hoc challenges which more and more appears without vanguard (see Don Tapscott), f.ex. the sudden appearance of a Global Player in one's local market, requires that effective response strategies are already in place and "lived" by the members of one's organisation. It is also true for the tremenduous opportunities for organisations which intend to capitalize on global opportunities and transform from a National Champ into a Global Player (the performance argument)
4. Evolving new leadership styles globally need to be aligned with respective global strategies: "wikileadership" and other new phenomena in the filed of leadership styles are currently evolving at the grassroot level. They will quickly and soon reach the middle management levels and then the Board room. Effective execution of strategies is a function of effective leadership (the leadership alignment argument)
5. The rise of global startups demands a new strategic paradigm: due to the rise of startups with business models which are scaled around the world almost instantly after initial market success, a global strategy paradigm needs to embrace the strategic requirements of entrepreneurial ecosystems and not just cater to large corporations (the global startups argument)
6. It is a matter of inclusiveness to allocate global resources more effîciently & socially responsible: The old school of global strategy setting would hardly allow to adjust to local requirements which in the case of emerging economies would sometimes lead to the exclusion of certain customer segments. Modern global strategies will have to provide a strategic framework that allows to target many different customer segments around the globe at the same time (the inclusiveness argument)
7. Your suggestions here!?
Please comment intensively on the answers #1-6, feel free to make suggestions to modify them, to delete or add. Please allow me to develop the main idea using your thoughts as well.
I will also integrate Quora in this process, but firstly would like to make sure that questions are discussed here.
To Lilly&Paul: So, what is your next question? In addition, I promise to you to upload a picture from my visit of a very beautiful stone garden in Kyoto, ok?
