“For the brighter future”
I know it’s been a year. I know that GMW will not get a 4th season. But guys in the last episode of season 1st, when R*cas is on a date, Lucas tells Riley to go to Maya (because she was sad and all that). The scene is set in the subway; Lucas tells Riley to go, he gives up their date; and the poster behind them is saying “For a brighter future”. Foreshadowing for Lucaya? I guess so, since those subway posters already gave us some foreshadowing.

i’m obviously not trying to conflate Riley’s problems with Lucas to a failed relationship between a now-abusive husband and his ex-partner in a rural community during a time of extreme racial and class prejudice, but i think there’s a connection to be made IN LITERATURE about nature illustrating a path that certain things are Supposed to take, but that the same path might not be (or lead to) the ideas or people that these beings ultimately come to love and understand. Shug is better off not knowing the true Albert, and she knows she’s better for it, something she may not have understood at the time. She didn’t want to have to challenge nature, but in finding for herself what she cares about and loves, she is able to feel more passionately (aka her conviction may not have been as strong had she not been tested by the circumstances she thought she had to be a part of).
GIRL MEETS PLUTO FORESHADOWING
I’m not sure if this has already been mentioned but I was looking back on a couple episodes to figure out what Farkle potentially said in Girl Meets Goodbye.
So I watched Girl Meets Pluto (which I thought would be a weird ep to watch since it wasn’t really a riarkle episode in my opinion) but I picked up on something.
Farkle (talking about Angela to Shawn):
“I know I’d miss Riley and Maya if I didn’t see them for a long time.” AND “Do you think your old feelings will get all stirred up for her?”
There are rumors going around about the game changer and if what I believe is true then this reaction with Farkle would definitely make sense with Riley.
ON JOSH'S AGE
Um? You guys are justifying jshaya by saying that he's only 2 years and six weeks older... That math seems wrong... Wouldn't that make him 2 years and approximately 46 weeks older? 2 years and 323 days older? Those six weeks are the only times he's not three years older than her, right? Or am I not getting this math correct? Point is, IT'S STILL THREE FUCKING YEARS.
a few thoughts on girl meets ski lodge part 2 and its consequences
maya hart is everything and she’s starting to get all the good stuff she deserves. the second joshaya conversation is proof of this. i’m really really into this relationship’s development. you see here we have the one relationship with the three years difference (18-15/16?) yet the healthiest one. it’s no longer one-sided or purely platonic. they both like each other, but they are aware it’s not right to date YET. they will live their lives, see where those take them, and in a future someday MAYBE they will be more than a thing. what implies that they’re not tied to each other until maya is old enough, which makes their agreement an actual mature one.
i don’t hate rucas, i see the cuteness in it okay? but it’s getting more and more problematic. mainly, because of lucas being sick-jealous, possesive and petty af. it’s! not! okay! i know it’s a disney show and it’s quite hard more-like-impossible to extirpate the misogyny out of disney, BUT it’s quite simple to problematize lucas’ behaviour. stand up riley you queen! call out that passive-agressive violence maya! (at least topanga does). it’s time for shows, and even more for the ones who are aimed to preteen and teen audience, to acknowledge and reject these misogynist “subtle” agressions of romantic (and others) relationships. i mean, it could be a nice cute bubbly relationship if they talked out these problems, making it healthier.
i hope riley gets to grow up like a lot this season. i love her character, she’s beautiful everywhere one looks at, and i love how she always sees the brighter side of things and people. but her naivety won’t take her that far. i think she can be the great human being she is while being a little more idk awake??, simply more aware of issues that aren’t about her and the 10 people that surround her daily. high school years are the time when you realize that. also what the fuck is this about riley thinking maya is a criminal, that wants to screw up the world?? she’s clearly nothing like that, but i feel like riley’s vision of the world doesn’t let her see the real maya. not everything (mostly anything) is black or white, i thought they’d learnt that at gm the new teacher.
also! people who think a (disney) show can actually educate you on feelings: don’t. sometimes you might like the same person your friend likes, and it might not be because you’re trying to protect your friend or even be them, or because you’re going throw an identity crisis. sometimes you like a person because of what that person is, and your friendships have nothing to do with that (!!what it’s actually not rare at all, is that friends have a lot in common and aren’t completely opposites so it’s not that crazy that you like the same person!!) and it’s confusing and it might bring trouble, but that’s what feelings are. i’m sorry.

My thoughts on Riley and Lucas...
From a purely psychological perspective: As of right now, Riley and Lucas are noticeably insecure individuals who have a generally idealistic perspective on life and how things should be. Riley’s idealization of Lucas stems from the idea that he is her “Prince” - She is the little girl romanticizing Disney Princess movies and holding onto the *usually* unrealistic notion that a charming, handsome man will just come into her life and sweep her off her feet. (Oh, heyyyy, Charlie Gardner Cheese Soufflé…) Does this sound like Lucas? No… I can guarantee you, when Riley told Lucas that she thinks about talking to him all the time, she really meant that she fantasizes about how she would like conversations to go and how she would like to see him act. They are most likely not at all realistic… Lucas, on the other hand, got a pretty solid ego boost when he found out that Riley liked him - I did notice a only a tiny bit of cockiness in the way he acted around Riley and Maya in the first few episodes. I mean, why wouldn’t he? Two very pretty girls spotted him and gave him attention. Once Riley and Lucas began to have conversations, they began to genuinely like each other as humans - as friends. When you have a conversation with someone and have mutual interests, that is a sign that you are becoming friends. Unfortunately, many young people believe common interests are grounds for a relationship - but what about compatible personality traits? What about a two-way street? What about needs being met? What about the autonomy of each individual? What about the feeling that your significant other makes you want to be a better person? I just do not see these in Riley and Lucas’s relationship. I don’t see any of these…
Now, back to Riley and Lucas… Riley idealizes the crap out of Lucas - this we’ve established. Lucas likes the fact that Riley likes him because it’s an ego boost - this we’ve also established. The basis of this relationship is insecurity. Lucas puts stipulations on the relationship because of his insecurity and Riley agrees to them because her fantasy is coming true. Well, that’s fun… I’m only going to say this once: IN ORDER FOR A RELATIONSHIP TO THRIVE, BOTH PARTIES MUST FEEL SECURE, WITHIN IT. Cool? Cool. I love, love, LOVE what @theowldetective asked, last night: “What happened to GM STEM Riley??” GM STEM Riley would NOT take this lying down. In fact, if you listen to how Riley responds to Lucas when he asks her not to “talk about important stuff” with anyone else, you can tell that she is not 100% down with it - she questions him… In the bay window scene with Maya at the end of the episode, Riley said some things that really put up some red flags… She said, “We’re going to try…” Okay, to me, this sounds like something a couple who was previously separated would say, but maybe that’s just me (I doubt it’s just me)… She also said, “Our first boyfriends, Maya…Who knows how long that’s going to last…” and “We’re going to meet new people, all the time…” OKAY. Now, THOSE sound like she has doubts that the relationship would last… …perhaps GM STEM Riley is still alive within her. ❤️
