Here’s the thing:

Markus is Detroit: Become Human’s Lead Protagonist. The insult is that both he and his actor have basically been removed from all further marketing following Jesse’s 2019 ComicCon appearance and has diminished his character and importance as a result.

North is the overall Deuteragonist due to her ability to take over Markus’s storyline. The insult comes in the form of her being unable to properly complete that storyline because QD annihilated the player’s agency when they refused to give her a way to win.

While Connor is the protagonist of his own story, in terms of the overall narrative he is (at best) the Tritagonist and (at worst) the Antagonist. The insult comes when QD props his importance up over the characters of colour and female characters who rightfully have more narrative importance than him to cater to fan demand.

Kara, like Connor, was the protagonist of her own story. But in terms of the overall narrative, her story is that of an optional side quest that would have been better suited for a DLC… and that’s the insult.

tbh i don't think bruce going "omg jason i love you, come back home, i don't care that you murdered people, took over gotham's crime, took huge cuts from racketeering etc etc" would make him a good parent

unconditional love does not mean you forgive every action of said loved one despite how much harm it may cause to others, you can love them despite their actions without ignoring their actions

imo a good parent should care about what impact their kid's actions are causing and is also allowed to not respond with immediate placating or whatever similar things people seem to think bruce should have done to be deemed a "good parent"

i don't understand why "good parent" seems to be becoming synonymous with "must bend over backwards to ignore everything their kid does just because they love their kid"

i never watched a lot of scandal but there was one episode where the mother (who payed the fixers) realized her son had done exactly what he was accused of and pulled the funding, telling him he had to face the consequences of his own actions, and i think about that episode very often.

Because even in that scenario, i didnt expect to see that kind of parent reaction on screen.

I dont actually have a good answer to this weird cultural drift re: parenting btw, but i bet there’s a good thesis in there somewhere

and also I’m grateful for what this country has given me, yes it sucks, but like, I’ve been able to do so much stuff because I live here. America needs a lot of work. People are stupid, the government is stupid, the PRESIDENT of all things is incredibly stupid, but I’m still really thankful for the good things it’s given. Music, food, people, experiences, a lot of things. And although it’s really bad, I still like my country, for the good things, and all my friends, and all the things I’m able to participate in because I live here. I doubt I’d be able to do half the things I like doing if I lived in another country

How do you exactly research a character’s personality? I have trouble with that, any advice can help! Thank you ❤️

Hi there!! Thanks for asking and sorry it took me so long to get to this! I check tumblr very infrequently 😞 My best advice is to kind of let your brain pickle in the character’s VOICE first and foremost. It’s much easier for talkative characters (like Mirage haha) because you can build a sense of their personality based on what they say about a given situation in their story, but the rule applies for just about any character regardless of how much/how little they speak.

Try writing practice dialogue between your character of choice and another one, and really focus on what your chosen character is saying. What I find to be super helpful especially if I’m stuck is to rip some direct quotes from the source material and stick them into any applicable situation and then build dialogue around them! Plus it makes for some fun easter eggs for your readers.

Getting a character’s personality right is very very important to me, so I spend a lot of time on dialogue heavy scenes usually with the source material on one side of my screen and my doc on the other, and I will write dialogue as I scrub through the media! Watching clips of your character’s voice actor in interviews can even be helpful too.

I would say another big part of nailing a character’s personality is not just the content of their dialogue (the specific words they say) but also their CADENCE and DELIVERY. For example, I write Optimus and Mirage very differently. Mirage speaks quickly, casually, and usually too much. There are lots of apostrophes, extra words, vocal tidbits (“y’know”, “c’mon”, etc.). Optimus is very stately and collected, and usually says exactly what he means to say and speaks with few contractions. Again, a lot of this is picked up from multiple rewatches (or the equivalent) of whatever source material you’re using.

Body language is also good to note. Again (using Mirage as like my only example LMAO), Mirage is very bouncy and animated and uses his whole body to talk. He’s always moving, so I try to acknowledge that frequently in my writing to give the reader a physical sense of how animated he is.

These are very loose guidelines and should be taken with a grain of salt! But I hope they are helpful :-) Thank you so much for asking, best of luck with your writing endeavors!!! Feel free to ask if anything here needs clarification or expansion.
