“Mommy’s still in bed,” said Morgan unhappily, as she spread feed on the ground for the chickens.
“Well, Mommy had a very stressful day yesterday,” said Tony. “She had to talk to a lot of reporters and politicians, very important people, and get a lot of work done. She needs her rest.”
“But it’s your birthday!” Morgan protested.
“I know,” said Tony with a smile. “But remember when we told you that Mommy got sick on Christmas when she was little? Sometimes these things happen and they don’t stop for our special days. So we’ll just let Mommy sleep until she feels better.” He was starting to wonder if Pepper had actually caught something, but supposed they would find out when she woke up.

Tony gave a low whistle at his first sight of the place. “What are you planning to do with it?” he asked. “Renovate? Sell? Live in? How many ghost stories are there? The place looks big enough for at least four ghosts.” He didn’t believe in ghosts, but this old mansion looked like exactly the sort of place where people would expect them.

They’d gone into town to take Comet for a checkup. The pup was very happy to be out of the vet’s office, so Tony figured they ought to take her to the local park to let her run around a bit. While Comet was enjoying supervised playtime with a friendly Australian Shepherd Dog, Morgan noticed a damp Amazon box next to the garbage can, and went to peek inside it.
“Mommy!” she called. “Daddy! Look! Look!”
