Not sure who "Billy" is...
This happened in 1973. I was sitting in the den at Graceland, watching TV, when suddenly I felt a presence behind me. I turned around and saw Elvis standing there. When we made eye contact, he said, “What are you watching, Billy?”
I said, “Oh, nothing much — just killing time and waiting for you to get up.”
He chuckled and said, “Let’s take a ride around town.”
“Sounds great,” I said.
Then he added, “Run upstairs and get my wallet, so I’ll have my license with me.”
I said, “Okay,” and ran upstairs. Now, when I talk about Elvis’ wallet, let me say this — it was loaded. It had so much money in it you couldn’t even fold it.
We climbed into one of his Cadillacs and drove downtown. We passed Sun Records, then rolled down Beale Street. As we were driving, Elvis spotted a man sitting on the curb — someone clearly down on his luck. Without hesitation, Elvis made a U-turn and pulled the car up beside him. “Hand me my wallet, Billy,” he said.
I asked, “How much?”
Elvis said, “All of it.” There must have been at least five thousand dollars in there. I handed it to him, and he tucked it between his legs. He rolled down the window and said, “How you doing, sir?” The man looked stunned — almost like he couldn’t believe who was talking to him.
“Mr. Presley?” he asked.
Elvis smiled. “Please, call me Elvis.”
The man’s face lit up. He started telling Elvis how he’d bought all his records and seen all his movies. Elvis smiled and said, “That’s enough about me. Let’s talk about you. What’s going on in your life?”
The man looked down and said, “I’m just a little down on my luck right now, but I know things will change soon. The good Lord always comes through.” Elvis nodded, reached for the stack of money, and extended his hand.
The man hesitated when he saw it. “I can’t take this, Mr. Presley.”
Elvis stopped him gently. “Please — call me Elvis.”
The man still shook his head. “Elvis, I can’t take this.”
Elvis looked him in the eye and said softly, “Sir, this is my way of repaying you for buying all those records and watching those silly movies.”
The man’s eyes filled with tears — and so did mine. “God bless you, Elvis,” the man said.
Elvis smiled and replied, “Sir, He already has.”
As we drove away, I said, “That’s the kindest thing I’ve ever seen, Elvis.”
He glanced over at me and said, “What’s the use of having all that money if you can’t share it with someone who needs it?” I sat there in awe, amazed at what I’d just witnessed. I wish everyone could have seen that side of Elvis — the side that gave quietly, from the heart, without expecting anything in return.
God blessed us with the most beautiful world, but cursed us with losing the ones we love the most.
