Each and every one of you has breathed a unique life into your character. You have shaped and molded them into something more than what we had originally been given from their canon works. While staying “true” to canon seems to be something everyone strives for, I personal have always admired those who go beyond canon. Those who add things, develop things, put things into a character that was not there before.
Give them life, give them personalities more diverse and complex. All of you have taken a canon character and made them their own. In my honest opinion you all have crafted canon characters better than their originals. More depth, more power, more detail, more life.
I have never been one to dabble with Canon characters thanks to rough past experiences, but you four are the exception to such a rule. Thank you for showing me the positive side of canon characters. Thank you for not being elitist and conforming. Thank you for being open, caring. Thank you for being so accepting and wonderful –– this dash wouldn’t be the same without you.
❛ on the contrary i know exactly who you are. ❜ gran gran and all the occupants of the southern water tribe back home knew the legend of maui. how could they not ? the ocean was as much a connecter as it was a divider amongst islands, and legends transcended those mundane boundaries. a demigod he may be, but his transgression superseded his renown. though that certainly didn’t make him her enemy. he had merely caught her by surprise; especially with his landing.
the water encasing her arms was swiftly returned to the ocean. ❛ you’re maui demigod of the wind and sea. i’m not from here, but my people know of you and of what you’ve done. ❜

kubo doesn’t know where he would be if his path had never crossed maui’s. he does not WANT to know. he had the villagers, of course, he'd always had them. but they are not his FAMILY. for all that they have done for him and that he has done in return they are not family. and that, beyond anything else in the ENTIRE world is what kubo wants. what he'd dreamed of his entire life, his family: happy and whole.
after the dust had settled in his village. after his GRANDFATHER had settled into life as a human kubo had felt a terrible aching. the little village he'd grown up in was beginning to feel too small. it was too familiar. it was too painful. with assurances from the villagers that his grandfather would be looked after he'd known it was time to move on.
before he'd even left his village he'd begun growing into something LARGER than himself. a hero! a champion! the storyteller! the demi-god! all these titles are just stones upon a back too young to carry them. but carry them he does! in memory of the sacrifices made for him, the heroes who died to keep him safe. to carry on the legacies passed to him. it is an HONOR as much as it is a burden, at times. kubo wonders if life will always be this way because of WHAT he is. burden upon burden with happiness always just out of reach. he wants to KNOW. he wants to know all about what life has in store for him.
he is growing older and the world grows more dangerous around him in kind. but there is a solace to be found in the only person who can walk this road beside him: MAUI. in all the loneliness and DESTINY the world has laid out before him MAUI might be the one kindness it has ever brought him. he bursts with magic, and kindness, and LIFE. there is a feeling of BROTHERHOOD, of SAFETY. who had protected him since his parents? who had watched over him? these are all feelings that had become unknown to him.
what had not become unknown was the creeping feeling of DREAD that every child knows. it comes when an adult is HIDING something. when they are scared to TELL you something. when WORDS cause a hero to crumble at their foundation tragedy is about to be spilled from their lips. kubo allows himself to be held in maui's arms but does not dare to look away from his face. when the truth falls upon his ears no matter how gently said it is like a crack of THUNDER. he'd thought, sitting in the ruins of the beetle fortress, where he'd been born, where he'd watched his parent's FALL, that there would be no feeling of anguish comparable. somehow this is worse. it is like LOSING them all over again.
❛ i'll never see them again? ❜ he asks so quietly it could be missed. he almost WANTS it to be. he knows maui will tell him the truth and if this is the truth he does not want it. he doesn't want more proof that life could be so CRUEL to those it calls its heroes. in that moment, wrapped in maui's arms kubo can be nothing but a child. there is no great evil for him to defeat. there is no quest to go on. you can not CONQUER death, you cannot defeat the divide between the living and the lost. ❛ i'm going to be alone, FOREVER? ❜
