“I’m afraid the situation is worse than you feared. Your concern that your horse is fat and slow can be resolved. My concern is that she’s being ridden by a dumbass. The good news is, you’ll be getting the new horse you believe you require by sundown,” Siobhan Llewelyn lambasted the eager traveler as she ran her hand over the horse’s enlarged abdomen. She hadn’t expected to spend her afternoon welcoming a foal into the world, but it seemed that lately everyone, even horses, wanted to settle in the town of Deadwood.

Not much startled Siobhan Llewelyn, but the poorly contained chuckle from the stranger who was suddenly leaning against the wooden fence caused a warmth in her heart that rivaled the sweltering August day. Siobhan was inherently distrustful of strangers as they passed through town. One had to be wary in Deadwood. However, the way her golden retriever bolted to the new man with his tail wagging affectionately was not lost on her. Like most men, Siobhan didn’t give the handsome stranger much thought as there was now much more important work to be done. None more important than getting the vapid traveler out of her way.

“There’s a hotel just west of here. You’ll be glad to know it’s cheap because my work isn’t. I’ll keep your mare comfortable, and the three of you will be ready to move on by morning. Now, this time, you’ll go easy on them. You wouldn’t want to have to walk to San Fransisco, would you? I wouldn’t mind seeing you try after the way you treated her. Go on. Unless you’re a seasoned equestrian, you won’t want any part of this,” she shooed the first man away, pointing out the dirt road that led to the hotel.

The handsome stranger stood from where he bent to scratch and pet the eager dog, who typically had as much patience for strangers as Siobhan, and removed his hat. “Can you send me to Mr. Llewelyn?” he asked, his eyes were a brilliant teal in the sunlight.

Gold Rush be damned, I need to get myself some of that turquoise. She thought as she approached him. Siobhan patted the pistol at her hip. “I can send you to Mr. Llewelyn, but ammunition is scarce, and you haven’t done anything wrong, yet” she teased. “I’m the Llewelyn you’re looking for and this is my ranch. What can I do for you?” she asked a bit more sweetly after making sure he knew exactly what to expect from her.

“My own horse needs a new saddle and from what I understand, you run the best outpost in the west. What’s your cost?” he asked, disrupted by the whinny of the expectant mare. He turned his attention to the poor creature and offered what comfort he could. The mare responded to his touch as happily as her dog, Penybryn, had. There was a surprisingly gentle quality to the sun-battered man with two long scars across his cheek.

Siobhan crossed her arms and watched. “As I told the horse’s owner, I don’t come cheap. Money isn’t the issue at hand. You help me with her, and I’ll get you the best equipment we have, and I’ll throw in a bottle of whisky. Deal?” she offered, extending her hand.

“You’ve got yourself a deal, Llewelyn. And please, call me Stagg. Galen Stagg. The pleasure is all mine,” he grinned as he shook her hand, knowing better than to kiss it as he wished to.

Siobhan was surprised to find she reacted to the touch of his hand the way her dog and the mare had. “Agree to disagree. I believe the pleasure is mine,” she smiled before turning to fetch the whisky.

@that-scouse-wizard @cursebreakerfarrier - what have you wonderful people done to me? If you would have asked me a week ago, I'd have said with 100% certainty that I would never write a western scene but that wrote itself in under an hour.

Pubblicare un disco strumentale oggigiorno è sempre una scommessa. Perché non è mai così immediato da ascoltare e la maggioranza degli ascoltatori cercano ascolti più immediati e di facile fruizione (purtroppo la cosa fa la fortuna di chi ha veramente poco da dire). William Tyler compie una scelta ancor più coraggiosa. Per il suo Goes West sceglie la chitarra acustica come protagonista assoluta. Scelta maturata dopo dieci anni di rispettabile carriera in cui ha dovuto portare il pesante fardello di essere un eterna promessa del folk. Per liberarsi di quel fardello decide ti trasferirsi dal Tennessee alla più solare California dove riscopre il gusto per un folk più tradizionale in cui lo spazio per l’elettronica è ridotto all’essenzilale. Il che gli fa ricordare di essere un chitarrista eccezionale con un fingerpicking posseduto da pochi. E qui nasce la differenza tra Goes West e altri dischi strumentali. Perché le dieci tracce che lo compongono non sono solo dieci pezzi strumentali. Sono dieci canzoni per chitarra che diventa voce in un canto articolato, ricco e che lascia senza fiato. Tyler poi si circonda di valenti musicisti per dare completezza al progetto e ne viene fuori uno dei dischi più belli di questo inizio di 2019. Linee armoniche articolate e complesse, ricche ed elaborate in cui alberga quel gusto per il romanticismo e il bello che da sempre ispira chi fa arte. Accordi di rara purezza in cui le trame più delicate vengono rafforzate da inserti appena accennati di elettronica a dare coralità alla struttura per cogliere al meglio quella purezza. Goes West è senza dubbio un disco da non perdere. Di quelli da ascoltare con calma e riascoltare più volte per cogliere ogni volta aspetti diversi e arricchenti. Insomma, una gemma preziosa.
