Free 1/2 Goldback came in the mail today. The photo doesn’t do it justice! This is from the Alpha Series, meaning that it was the first print-run of these. Amazing!
I think it would be neat to see Goldbacks in my own state. There are alot of people that don’t understand them and find the premiums to be annoying. Personally, I find them to be reasonable and more reliable compared to the US dollar. What’s the difference between the two? The US dollar does not hold any value to it, rather it’s a “fiat” currency, meaning it’s not backed by a commodity. So essentially, it’s based on trust by the government. A Goldback, on the other hand, is a note that contains a precise amount of 24k gold-the lowest currently being a 1/2 goldback, which comes out to approximately 1/2000 troy ounce of gold. Compared to the US dollar, which has only been losing value over time, the goldback has only increased in value. One important thing to note is that the goldback value uses the real-time price of gold. For example, the 1/2 goldback currently sells for about 4 US dollars. I think it’s awesome that many small-businesses have began to use them throughout the country. With the discontinuation of the US penny, I wonder if goldbacks will be affected in any way.
